Abstract

A device for temporarily sealing an opening in a blood vessel is provided. The device comprises a cutting mechanism for creating an opening in a blood vessel and a seal for sealing the opening in the blood vessel. The seal is delivered through an inner lumen of a tool body coupled to the cutting mechanism. Methods for using the device to construct an anastomosis between two vessels are also provided.

Claims

1. A device for creating an opening in a first blood vessel and for sealing the opening in the first blood vessel while an anastomosis is created between the first blood vessel and a second blood vessel, the device comprising:

a cutting mechanism for creating the opening in the first blood vessel, the cutting mechanism comprising at least one electrode, wherein the cutting mechanism includes a closed configuration for creating the opening in the first blood vessel and an opened configuration;

a seal for sealing the opening in the first blood vessel wherein the seal is attached to a tether independent of the cutting mechanism and configured to facilitate removal of the seal during or after anastomosis; and

a tool body fixedly coupled to the cutting mechanism, the tool body comprising a distal end having a distal opening and a proximal end having a proximal opening, the cutting mechanism attached to the distal end and an inner lumen extending between the distal opening and the proximal opening for delivering the seal through the tool body and into the opening in the first blood vessel when the cutting mechanism is in the opened configuration, and wherein the seal is moveable distally and proximally with respect to the cutting mechanism.

2. The device of claim 1 further comprising a shaft attached to the seal.

3. The device of claim 1 further comprising a rod attached to the seal.

4. The device of claim 1 further comprising a conductor for delivering energy to the electrode.

5. The device of claim 4 wherein the energy is RF energy.

6. The device of claim 4 wherein the conductor is metal.

7. The device of claim 1 wherein the seal comprises a coating.

8. The device of claim 1 wherein the seal comprises a flexible material.

9. The device of claim 1 wherein the seal comprises one or more ribs.

10. The device of claim 1 further comprising a shaft for delivering the seal through the tool body and into the opening in the first blood vessel.

11. The device of claim 1 further comprising a rod for delivering the seal through the tool body and into the opening in the first blood vessel.

12. The device of claim 1 wherein at least a portion of the seal is inflatable.

13. The device of claim 12 wherein the seal comprises one or more inflatable chambers.

14. The device of claim 1 wherein the seal comprises one or more openings for delivering one or more fluids.

15. The device of claim 1 wherein the seal comprises one or more openings for delivering one or more agents.

16. The device of claim 1 wherein the seal comprises one or more suture guides.

17. The device of claim 1 wherein the seal comprises a plurality of sealing members which are used in combination to seal the opening.

18. The device of claim 1 wherein the seal comprises a dissolvable material.

19. A device for creating an opening in a first blood vessel and for sealing the opening in the first blood vessel while an anastomosis is created between the first blood vessel and a second blood vessel, the device comprising:

a cutting mechanism having a cutting blade, wherein the cutting mechanism includes a closed configuration for creating the opening in the first blood vessel and an opened configuration;

an inflatable seal having at least one inflatable chamber for sealing the opening in the first blood vessel wherein the seal when inflated is configured to include an inner chamber within a continuous surface across the opening of the blood vessel, and the surface includes at least one opening for delivering one or more fluids from the inner chamber of the seal; and

a tool body fixedly coupled to the cutting mechanism, the tool body comprising a distal end having a distal opening and a proximal end having a proximal opening, the cutting mechanism attached to the distal end and an inner lumen extending between the distal opening and the proximal opening for delivering the seal through the tool body and into the opening in the first blood vessel when the cutting mechanism is in the opened configuration, and wherein the seal is moveable distally and proximally with respect to the cutting mechanism.

20. The device of claim 19 further comprising at least one lumen coupled to the inflatable chamber.

21. The device of claim 19 wherein the seal comprises a coating.

22. The device of claim 19 wherein the seal comprises a flexible material.

23. The device of claim 19 wherein the seal comprises one or more ribs.

24. The device of claim 19 further comprising a shaft for delivering the seal through the tool body and into the opening in the first blood vessel.

25. The device of claim 19 wherein the seal comprises one or more openings for delivering one or more agents.

26. The device of claim 19 wherein the seal comprises one or more suture guides.

27. A device for creating an opening in a first blood vessel and for sealing the opening in the first blood vessel while an anastomosis is created between the first blood vessel and a second blood vessel, the device comprising:

a cutting mechanism having a cutting blade, wherein the cutting mechanism includes a closed configuration for creating the opening in the first blood vessel and an opened configuration;

a seal comprising a plurality of seal members coupled to a delivery shaft, wherein the seal members are configurable into a delivery configuration for passage through the opening in the blood vessel and a sealing configuration for sealing the opening in the blood vessel such that the plurality of the seal members are disposed in an interior of the blood vessel; and

a tool body fixedly coupled to the cutting mechanism, the tool body comprising a distal end having a distal opening and a proximal end having a proximal opening, the cutting mechanism attached to the distal end and an inner lumen extending between the distal opening and the proximal opening for delivering the seal through the tool body and into the opening in the first blood vessel when the cutting mechanism is in the opened configuration, and wherein the seal is moveable distally and proximally with respect to the cutting mechanism.

28. The device of claim 27 wherein the seal comprise a coating.

29. The device of claim 27 wherein the seal comprises a flexible material.

30. The device of claim 27 wherein the seal comprises one or more ribs.

31. The device of claim 27 wherein the seal comprises one or more openings for delivering one or more fluids.

32. The device of claim 27 wherein the seal comprises one or more openings for delivering one or more agents.

33. The device of claim 27 wherein the seal comprises one or more suture guides.

34. The device of claim 27 wherein the delivery configuration comprises the seal members being in a stacked configuration.

35. The device of claim 27 wherein the sealing configuration comprises the seal members being in a fanned out configuration.
