Abstract

A system for refreshing cached data based on content update frequency includes an application/presentation layer coupled to a caching layer, the caching layer including cached content, and a content management system coupled to the application/presentation layer, the content management system configured to provide a content invalidation message to the caching layer informing the caching layer when the cached content is updated.

Claims

1. A system for refreshing cached data based on content update frequency, comprising:

an application/presentation layer operatively coupled to a caching layer, the caching layer including cached content; and

a content management system coupled to the application/presentation layer, the content management system configured to provide a content invalidation message to the caching layer informing the caching layer when the cached content is updated.

2. The system of claim 1, in which the content invalidation message further comprises a content identifier associated with the cached content.

3. The system of claim 2, in which the content identifier uniquely identifies the cached content.

4. The system of claim 3, in which the caching layer provides the cached content if it has no content invalidation message for any cached content.

5. The system of claim 3, in which if the caching layer has a content invalidation message for any cached content, the caching layer requests new content from the application presentation layer.

6. The system of claim 5, in which the application/presentation layer requests the new content from the content management system.

7. The system of claim 6, in which the application/presentation layer tracks a content identifier that identifies the new content delivered to the caching layer.

8. The system of claim 7, in which after the content is rendered by the application/presentation layer, the application/presentation layer places the content identifier into an HTTP response header and sends the HTTP response header to the caching layer.

9. The system of claim 1, in which the content management system is configured to provide the content invalidation message upon query from the caching layer.

10. A method for refreshing cached data based on content update frequency:

caching content in a caching layer;

determining whether the cached content is valid by determining whether the caching layer includes a content invalidation message; and

if the caching layer includes a content invalidation message, requesting updated content.

11. The method of claim 10, further comprising receiving the content invalidation message from a content management system coupled to an application/presentation layer, wherein the content invalidation message informs the caching layer when the content is updated.

12. The method of claim 11, in which the content invalidation message further comprises a content identifier associated with the cached content.

13. The method of claim 12, in which the content identifier uniquely identifies the cached content.

14. The method of claim 10, further comprising providing the cached content in the absence of a content invalidation message.

15. The method of claim 11, in which the cached content is a web page and a frequency with which the web page is rendered and cached is determined by the frequency of updates to the content contained within the web page.

16. The method of claim 15, in which the caching layer receives a content identifier that identifies new content delivered to the caching layer.

17. The method of claim 10, further comprising placing the content identifier into an HTTP response header and receiving the HTTP response header in the caching layer.

18. A method for refreshing cached data based on content update frequency, comprising:

caching content in a caching layer;

providing a content invalidation message when the cached content is updated; and

updating the cached content based on the content invalidation message.

19. The method of claim 18, wherein the content invalidation message is provided by a content management system coupled to an application/presentation layer, and wherein the content invalidation message informs the caching layer when the content is updated.

20. The method of claim 19, in which the content invalidation message further comprises a content identifier associated with the cached content.

21. The method of claim 20, in which the content identifier uniquely identifies the cached content.

22. The method of claim 18, in which the cached content is a web page and a frequency with which the web page is rendered and cached is determined by the frequency of updates to the content contained within the web page.
