Abstract

A handheld display device for imaging a printed substrate and controlling playback of video associated with the printed substrate. The device comprises: an optical sensor for imaging an area of the printed substrate and for generating image data; a processor for determining interaction data using the image data, the interaction data identifying a substrate identity; a transceiver for retrieval of video data corresponding to part of the printed substrate; and a touch-sensitive display screen for displaying the video, or display information identifying the video, together with a static element for controlling video playback. Interaction with the static element via the touch-sensitive screen controls video playback.

Claims

1. A handheld display device for imaging a printed substrate and controlling playback of video associated with the printed substrate, said device comprising:

an optical sensor for imaging an area of the printed substrate and for generating image data;

a processor for determining interaction data using the image data, said interaction data identifying a page description corresponding to the printed substrate;

a transceiver for;

sending the interaction data to a computer system, thereby causing the computer system to identify the page description and retrieve video data corresponding to at least part of the printed substrate; and

receiving the video data from the computer system; and

a touch-sensitive display screen for displaying said video, or display information identifying said video, together with at least one static element for controlling video playback, wherein interaction with said at least one static element via said touch-sensitive screen controls said video playback.

2. The device of claim 1, which is a mobile phone or a personal digital assistant.

3. The device of claim 1, wherein said transceiver is at least one of:

a short-range wireless transceiver and a mobile phone transceiver.

4. The device of claim 1, wherein said interaction data identifies a position of the device relative to the printed substrate and said retrieved display data corresponds to a part of the substrate containing said position.

5. The device of claim 1, wherein said device comprises a memory for storing the retrieved video data.

6. The device of claim 1, wherein said device is configured for overlaying part of said printed substrate, and wherein printed content overlain by said screen identifies said video.

7. The device of claim 1, which is configured to play said video automatically after retrieval of said video data.

8. The device of claim 1, which is configured to play said video only after user interaction with said static element.

9. The device of claim 1, wherein display data corresponding to said printed content is retrieved with said video data, and wherein said display information includes displayed content corresponding to said printed content.

The device of claim 9, wherein said device is configured for overlaying part of said printed substrate, and wherein said displayed content is the same as printed content underlying said screen, with the exception that said displayed content includes said at least one static element for controlling video playback.

11. The device of claim 9, wherein said device is configured for overlaying part of said printed substrate, and wherein said displayed content is the same as printed underlying said screen, said printed content including said at least one static element.

12. The device of claim 1, further comprising means for snapping said display information, wherein snapped display information is displayed irrespective of a position of said device relative to said substrate.

13. The device of claim 1, wherein said printed substrate comprises coded data disposed thereon or therein, said coded data identifying a substrate identity indexed with said page description.

14. The device of claim 13, wherein said coded data further identifies a plurality of locations on the substrate.
