- an input/output module to receive wirelessly a request for information from an external device;
a monitoring module to record a last request for information from the external device and to determine whether a threshold period of time has elapsed since the last request for information; and
a telemetry unit to establish a wireless communication link with the external device, and to transmit the information requested over the wireless link based on an amount of time elapsed since the last request for the information.

The method controls how frequently a patient can retrieve status information from the implantable device based on a time period elapsed since a last interrogation and a power level of a battery.
