Abstract

Methods and articles utilizing a bonding material comprising ultra-accelerators and solvent-swollen diene rubber. Particular embodiments include a method for bonding surfaces of vulcanized diene rubber components. The method includes the steps of applying a bonding material having the solvent-swollen diene rubber and one or more ultra-accelerators to a surface of a first vulcanized rubber component and positioning a surface of a second vulcanized rubber component to oppose the surface of the first vulcanized rubber component with the bonding material between the opposing surfaces. The method further includes the step of bonding the opposing surfaces through the bonding material therebetween.

Claims

1. A method for bonding surfaces of vulcanized diene rubber components, the method comprising the steps of:

applying a bonding material to a surface of a first vulcanized rubber component, wherein the bonding material comprises a solvent-swollen diene rubber mixed with one or more ultra accelerators;

positioning a surface of a second vulcanized rubber component to oppose the surface of the first vulcanized rubber component with the bonding material between the opposing surfaces;

bonding the opposing surfaces through the bonding material therebetween.

2. The method of claim 1, before the step of positioning a surface of a second vulcanized rubber component, the method further comprising:

applying the bonding material to the surface of the second vulcanized rubber component.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein the step of bonding the opposing surfaces comprises:

maintaining the opposing surfaces having the bonding material therebetween at a temperature of between 15°

C. and 30°

C.

4. The method of claim 1, wherein the step of bonding the opposing surfaces comprises:

heating the opposing surfaces having the bonding material therebetween to a temperature of between 75°

C. and 175°

C.

5. The method of claim 1, wherein the solvent-swollen diene rubber is solvent-swollen natural rubber.

6. The method of claim 1, wherein the solvent-swollen diene rubber is solvent-swollen highly unsaturated diene rubber.

7. The method of claim 1, wherein the bonding material is devoid of a crosslinking agent that is capable of vulcanizing the interface layer alone.

8. The method of claim 1, wherein the solvent is an aliphatic hydrocarbon having between 4 and 10 carbon atoms.

9. The method of claim 1, wherein the solvent is hexane.

10. The method of claim 1, wherein the solvent is selected from cyclic alkane solvents, aromatic solvents or combinations thereof.

11. The method of claim 1, wherein a vapor pressure of the solvent is between 0 and 1 kPa at 20°

C.

12. The method of claim 1, wherein the ultra-accelerant is selected from TMTD, ZIPX, ZBEC, TBzTD, di-isopropyl xanthogen polysulfide or combinations thereof.

13. The method of claim 1, wherein bonding material further comprises an accelerant.

14. The method of claim 13, wherein the accelerant is selected from DCHA, DPG, DBA, MBTS or combinations thereof.

15. The method of claim 1, wherein the first component is a patch having a vulcanized diene rubber bonding surface and the second component is a tire having an interior surface, wherein the bonding surface of the patch is bonded to the interior surface of the tire through the bonding material therebetween.

16. The method of claim 15, wherein the patch comprises electronics for monitoring a condition of the tire.

17. A pneumatic tire, comprising:

a patch bonded to an interior surface of the tire by the method of claim 15.

18. The tire of claim 17, wherein the patch comprises electronics for monitoring a condition of the tire.

19. The tire of claim 17, wherein the patch is a reinforced patch.

21. The bonding agent of claim 19, further consisting essentially of:

one or more accelerators;

a tackifying resin; and

zinc stearate.

20. A bonding material for bonding surfaces of vulcanized rubber, the bonding material consisting essentially of:

a solvent-swollen diene rubber mixed with one or more ultra-accelerators.
