Abstract

According to one embodiment of the present invention, a method for automatically entering favorite locations into a navigation system is provided. The method according to one embodiment includes receiving information regarding a location from an object within a vehicle using a navigation system. An identifier to the information and the information and identifier are stored in the navigation system. The user may retrieve the information from the navigation system using the identifier. The information from the objects may be received in various wireless formats, including RFID, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi.

Claims

1. A method comprising:

receiving information regarding a location from an object within a vehicle using a navigation system;

assigning an identifier to said information;

storing said information and said identifier in said navigation system; and

retrieving said information from said navigation system using said identifier.

2. A method according to claim 1 wherein said receiving comprises receiving said information wirelessly from said object.

3. A method according to claim 2 wherein said receiving comprises transmitting a signal to said object and receiving said information in response to said transmitting.

4. A method according to claim 3 wherein said receiving comprises receiving a signal from an RFID tag.

5. A method according to claim 2 wherein said receiving comprises receiving a signal from a Bluetooth device.

6. A method according to claim 2 said receiving comprises receiving a signal from a cellular telephone.

7. A method according to claim 2 wherein said receiving comprises receiving a signal from a Wi-Fi device.

8. A method according to claim 1 wherein said identifier is a point of interest.

9. A method according to claim 1 wherein said receiving comprises receiving a signal from an employee badge.

10. A method according to claim 1 wherein said receiving comprises receiving information from a car key.

11. A method comprising:

transmitting a signal to a plurality of objects inside a vehicle using a GPS-based navigation system;

receiving signals from a plurality of objects inside said vehicle in response to said transmitting;

using said received signals to determine locations and names of said locations; and

storing said locations and names.

12. A method according to claim 11 further comprising storing said locations and names in said GPS-based navigation system.

13. A method according to claim 11 further comprising displaying said names of locations.

14. A method according to claim 13 wherein said displaying comprises displaying said names of locations in a menu of pre-stored locations, said method further comprising:

receiving an input from a user selecting one of said displayed names; and

providing directions to said location.

15. A system comprising:

a navigational system located in a vehicle;

at least one object located in said vehicle;

a receiver for receiving information from said objects by means of a wireless signal;

a storage device for storing said received information; and

a processor for receiving said information and generating directions to locations based on said information.

16. A system according to claim 15 further comprising a display device for displaying a list of said locations.

17. A system according to claim 16 further comprising a user interface for receiving a selection of a particular one of said displayed locations from a user, and, in response thereto, providing directions to said particular one of said displayed locations.

18. A system according to claim 15 wherein said receiver includes an RFID reader.

19. A system according to claim 15 wherein said receiver includes a WIFI receiver.

20. A system according to claim 15 wherein said receiver includes a cellular telephone receiver.

21. A system according to claim 15 wherein said objects include a smart itinerary.

22. A computer program product for controlling a navigation system, said computer program product comprising:

a computer usable medium having computer usable program code embodied therewith, said computer usable program code comprising;

computer usable program code configured to;

receive information regarding a location from an object within a vehicle using a navigation system;

assign an identifier to said information;

store said information and said identifier in said navigation system; and

retrieve said information from said navigation system using said identifier.

23. A computer program product according to claim 22 wherein said receive step further comprises receiving said information wirelessly from said object.

24. A computer program product according to claim 23 wherein said receive step further comprises receiving a signal from an RFID tag.

25. A computer program product according to claim 22 wherein said receive step further comprises receiving a signal from a hotel room key.
