Abstract

A method of using a survey system comprising at least one sensor. The method comprises operating the survey system to provide information regarding the orientation of the sensor relative to the Earth at a first resolution level while the sensor is a first distance relative to the Earth'"'"'s surface and operating the survey system to provide information regarding the orientation of the sensor relative to the Earth at a second resolution level while the sensor is a second distance relative to the Earth'"'"'s surface. The second distance is larger than the first distance. The second resolution level is higher than the first resolution level.

Claims

1. A method of determining an orientation of at least one portion of a wellbore, the method comprising:

generating a first signal from at least one sensor within a first portion of the wellbore while the at least one sensor is operating at a first resolution level, the first signal indicative of the orientation of the first portion of the wellbore relative to the Earth;

moving the at least one sensor between the first portion of the wellbore and a second portion of the wellbore; and

switching the at least one sensor between the first resolution level and a second resolution level in response to a depth of the at least one sensor, an inclination angle of the at least of sensor, a change of inclination angle of the at least one sensor, or characteristics of signals generated by the at least one sensor.

2. The method of claim 1, further comprising generating a second signal from the at least one sensor within a second portion of the wellbore while the at least one sensor is operating at the second resolution level, wherein the first portion is at a first depth, the second portion is at a second depth, the second depth larger than the first depth, the second resolution level higher than the first resolution level, the second signal indicative of the orientation of the second portion of the wellbore relative to the Earth.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein the first depth equals a first distance relative to the Earth'"'"'s surface.

4. The method of claim 3, wherein the second depth equals a second distance relative to the Earth'"'"'s surface.

5. The method of claim 1, wherein the orientation of the first portion of the wellbore comprises the inclination of the first portion of the wellbore.

6. The method of claim 5, wherein the orientation of the second portion of the wellbore comprises the inclination of the second portion of the wellbore.

7. The method of claim 1, wherein the switching between the first resolution level and the second resolution level is in response to the characteristics of the signals generated by the at least one sensor.

8. The method of claim 1, wherein the switching between the first resolution level and the second resolution level is in response to the depth of the at least one sensor exceeding a first predetermined value.

9. The method of claim 1, wherein the switching between the first resolution level and the second resolution level is in response to the inclination angle of the at least one sensor exceeding a first predetermined value.

10. The method of claim 1, wherein the at least one sensor comprises at least one gyroscopic sensor.

11. The method of claim 1, wherein the first resolution level has a corresponding range of rotation rate measurements of approximately zero to approximately 3,600 degrees per hour.

12. The method of claim 1, wherein the second resolution level has a corresponding range of rotation rate measurements of approximately zero to approximately 15 degrees per hour.

13. The method of claim 1, wherein the second resolution level has a corresponding range of rotation rate measurements of approximately zero to approximately 200 degrees per hour.

14. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

switching the at least one sensor between the second resolution level and a third resolution level in response to a depth of the at least one sensor, an inclination angle of the at least one sensor, a change of inclination angle of the at least one sensor, or characteristics of signals generated by the at least one sensor; and

generating a third signal from the at least one sensor within a third portion of the wellbore while the at least one sensor is operating at the third resolution level, wherein the third portion is at a third depth, the third depth larger than the second depth, the third resolution level higher than the second resolution level, the third signal indicative of the orientation of the third portion of the wellbore relative to the Earth.

15. The method of claim 14, wherein the switching between the second resolution level and the third resolution level is in response to the characteristics of the signals generated by the at least one sensor.

16. A survey system operable within a wellbore, the survey system comprising:

at least one sensor movable within the wellbore, the at least one sensor configured to generate one or more signals indicative of the orientation of portions of the wellbore relative to the Earth; and

a controller operationally coupled to the at least one sensor and adapted to receive the one or more signals from the at least one sensor, the controller operable to provide information at a first resolution level regarding the orientation of a first portion of the wellbore at a first depth and operable to provide information at a second resolution level regarding the orientation of a second portion of the wellbore at a second depth, the second depth larger than the first depth, the second resolution level greater than the first resolution level, the survey system configured to switch between the first resolution level and the second resolution level in response to a depth of the at least one sensor, an inclination angle of the at least one sensor, a change of inclination angle of the at least one sensor, or characteristics of signals generated by the at least one sensor.

17. The survey system of claim 16, wherein the at least one sensor comprises at least one gyroscopic sensor.

18. The survey system of claim 16, wherein the one or more signals comprise acoustic signals.

19. The survey system of claim 16, wherein the one or more signals comprise electrical signals.

20. The survey system of claim 16, wherein the survey system is configured to switch between the first resolution level and the second resolution level in response to the characteristics of the signals generated by the at least one sensor.

21. A method of operating at least one gyroscopic sensor within a wellbore, the method comprising switching the at least one gyroscopic sensor between a first resolution level and a second resolution level in response to a depth of the at least one gyroscopic sensor, an inclination angle of the at least one gyroscopic sensor, a change of inclination angle of the at least one gyroscopic sensor, or characteristics of signals generated by the at least one gyroscopic sensor.

22. The method of claim 21, wherein the switching the at least one gyroscopic sensor between the first resolution level and the second resolution level is in response to the characteristics of the signals generated by the at least one gyroscopic sensor.

23. The method of claim 21, wherein the switching the at least one gyroscopic sensor between the first resolution level and the second resolution level is in response to the depth of the at least one gyroscopic sensor exceeding a first predetermined value.

24. The method of claim 21, wherein the switching the at least one gyroscopic sensor between the first resolution level and the second resolution level is in response to the inclination angle of the at least one gyroscopic sensor exceeding a first predetermined value.

25. A survey system operable within a wellbore, the survey system comprising:

at least one gyroscopic sensor movable within the wellbore, the at least one gyroscopic sensor configured to generate one or more signals indicative of the orientation of the wellbore;

a controller operationally coupled to the at least one gyroscopic sensor and adapted to receive the one or more signals from the at least one gyroscopic sensor, the controller operable to provide information at a first resolution level regarding the orientation of the wellbore and operable to provide information at a second resolution level regarding the orientation of the wellbore, the survey system configured to switch between the first resolution level and the second resolution level in response to a depth of the at least one gyroscopic sensor, an inclination angle of the at least one gyroscopic sensor, a change of inclination angle of the at least one gyroscopic sensor, or characteristics of signals generated by the at least one gyroscopic sensor.
