1. A method for tap detection on a handheld electronic device, comprising:
- measuring acceleration using an accelerometer of the handheld electronic device;
determining when measured acceleration exceeds an upper limit threshold and a lower limit threshold within a predetermined duration of each other;
when the upper limit threshold and lower limit threshold have been exceeded, determining a rate of change of acceleration between the upper limit threshold and lower limit threshold and registering a tap input when the rate of change of acceleration exceeds a predetermined tap threshold.
