Abstract

Briefly, in accordance with one embodiment of the invention, a channel state information packet is encoded by a receiver side device and is fed back to the transmitter side device. The transmitter side device decodes the channel state information packet to extract an estimate of the channel response function.

Claims

35. A system comprising:

an access point including a transceiver configured to communicate via a wireless network; and

a mobile unit configured to communicate with the access point, the mobile unit including;

a transceiver; and

a channel estimation feedback encoder configured to;

quantize a channel response function of a signal received from the access point or a residual value of the channel response function, wherein the channel response function is represented by M complex numbers, wherein a channel estimate is subtracted from the channel response function to provide the residual value;

limit the channel response function to N complex numbers where N is less than M, wherein the N complex numbers are limited to values having time delays less than a predetermined delay spread;

convert the signal from a frequency domain representation of the signal to a time domain representation of the signal prior to said quantizing; and

generate a channel state information packet to be transmitted back to the access point, wherein the packet includes the quantized channel response function when the packet is a first feedback packet sent to the transmitter or a first feedback packet sent after a channel interruption, and includes the quantized residual value of the channel response function otherwise.

36. The system of claim 35, wherein the channel state information packet is included in an acknowledgement frame sent by the mobile unit to the access point in response to receiving the signal from the access point.

37. The system of claim 35, wherein the channel estimation feedback encoder is configured to perform an Inverse Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) to convert the signal from the frequency domain representation of the received signal to the time domain representation of the signal.

38. The system of claim 37, wherein channel estimation feedback encoder is configured to receive the M complex numbers as a representation of the received signal and to perform the Inverse FFT on the N complex numbers to obtain the time domain representation of the received signal.

39. The system of claim 35, wherein the channel estimation feedback encoder is configured to perform a linear quantization to quantize the residual value of the channel response function.

The system of claim 35, wherein the channel estimation feedback encoder is configured to calculate a channel attenuation estimation to quantize the channel response function, wherein the channel attenuation estimation includes an estimate of time delay attenuation function of a magnitude of the time domain representation of the signal.

41. The system of claim 35, wherein the channel estimation feedback encoder is configured to de-quantize the quantized values of the channel response function and to use the de-quantized values to calculate the residual value of the channel response function.

42. The system of claim 35, wherein the channel state information packet includes an indication of whether the packet includes the quantized channel response function or the quantized residual value of the channel response function.

43. The system of claim 42, wherein the channel state information packet includes a magnitude quantizer value, a phase quantizer value, and a coded value of the quantized channel response function.

44. The system of claim 42, wherein the channel state information packet includes a logarithm of a magnitude quantizer value, a logarithm of a phase quantizer value, and a coded value of the quantized channel response function.

45. The system of claim 35, wherein the access point includes a channel estimation feedback decoder configured to obtain a channel state estimation using the channel state information packet.

46. The system of claim 45, wherein the access point is configured to use the channel state estimation to adjust a modulation scheme for a subsequent transmission to the mobile unit.

The system of claim 45, wherein the channel estimation feedback decoder is configured to extract quantized values from the channel state information packet and to de-quantize the quantized values to obtain one of the quantized channel response function and the quantized residual value of the channel response function.

48. The system of claim 47, wherein the channel estimation feedback decoder is configured to de-quantize the quantized values by multiplying phase and magnitude values of the quantized values by corresponding phase and magnitude quantizer values extracted from the channel state information packet.

49. The system of claim 45,

wherein the channel state information packet includes an indication of whether the packet includes the quantized channel response function or the quantized residual value of the channel response function, and

wherein the channel estimation feedback decoder is configured to:

replace the current channel estimate with the received channel estimate if the packet includes the quantized channel response function; and

add the residual value to a current channel estimate to form an updated channel estimate if the packet includes the quantized residual value of the channel response function.

50. The system of claim 49, wherein the channel estimation feedback decoder is configured to perform an FFT using the updated channel estimate to generate a channel estimation in the frequency domain.

51. The system of claim 35, wherein the N complex numbers are limited to values having time delays less than 800 nanoseconds (ns).

52. The system of claim 35, wherein mobile unit includes:

a media access control (MAC) processor; and

an omnidirectional antenna,

wherein the channel estimation feedback encoder is included in the MAC processor and the transceiver is coupled to the MAC processor and the omnidirectional antenna.

53. The system of claim 35, wherein the access point includes a plurality of omnidirectional antennas coupled to the transceiver, and wherein the access point is configured to implement a spatial division multiple access (SDMA) system.

54. The system of claim 35, wherein the access point includes a plurality of omnidirectional antennas coupled to the transceiver, and wherein the access point is configured to implement a multiple input, multiple output (MIMO) system.
