Abstract

Disclosed herein are systems and methods for calibrating a continuous analyte sensor, such as a continuous glucose sensor. One such system utilizes one or more electrodes to measure an additional analyte. Such measurements may provide a baseline or sensitivity measurement for use in calibrating the sensor. Furthermore, baseline and/or sensitivity measurements may be used to trigger events such as digital filtering of data or suspending display of data.

Claims

1. A method for processing data from an analyte sensor in a host, the method comprising:

receiving sensor data from an analyte sensor, the sensor data indicative of an analyte concentration in a host;

measuring a change in sensitivity associated with the analyte sensor over a time period; and

calibrating the sensor data, using an electronic device, in response to the change in sensitivity measurement.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein the measuring is independent of an external reference value.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein the measuring is performed by the sensor.

4. The method of claim 1, wherein the measuring utilizes one or more electrodes of the analyte sensor.

5. The method of claim 1, wherein the measuring comprises measuring an auxiliary signal.

6. The method of claim 1, wherein the measuring comprises measuring a constant, non-glucose analyte concentration.

7. The method of claim 1, wherein the calibrating comprises requesting an external reference value in response to the measured change.

8. The method of claim 1, wherein further calibrations are performed at a frequency selected based on the measured sensitivity change.

9. The method of claim 1, wherein the calibrating is based on the measured change in sensitivity.

10. The method of claim 9, wherein the calibrating is further based on an external reference value.

11. The method of claim 1, wherein the calibrating comprises updating a previous calibration based on the measured change in sensitivity.

12. The method of claim 1, wherein the calibrating comprises augmenting a previous calibration based on the measured change in sensitivity.

13. The method of claim 1, further comprising determining a sensor stability based on the measured change in sensitivity.

14. The method of claim 13, further comprising displaying sensor data, wherein a determination as to whether sensor data is to be displayed is based on the determined sensor stability.

15. The method of claim 1, wherein the analyte sensor is a glucose sensor.
