Abstract

According to one aspect, a device for assisting in removing an implanted lead is provided. The device comprises a body portion having a center adapted to accommodate the lead, a cutting component coupled to the body portion to assist in separating tissue from the lead, and at least one anchoring component disposed at least partially within the body portion, the at least one anchoring component capable of providing pressure on the lead that resists movement of at least part of the body portion along the lead at least in part by applying fluid pressure.

Claims

1. A device for assisting in removing an implanted lead, the device comprising:

a body portion having a center adapted to accommodate the lead;

a cutting component coupled to the body portion to assist in separating tissue from the lead; and

at least one anchoring component disposed at least partially within the body portion, the at least one anchoring component capable of providing pressure on the lead that resists movement of at least part of the body portion along the lead at least in part by applying fluid pressure.

2. The device of claim 1, wherein the body portion has a distal portion and a proximal portion.

3. The device of claim 2, further comprising at least one expansion component capable of changing a distance between the distal portion and the proximal portion at least in part by applying fluid pressure.

4. The device of claim 3, wherein the expansion component includes at least one elongation balloon capable of increasing the distance between the distal portion and the proximal portion upon inflation and/or includes a piston mechanism operating under fluid pressure.

5. The device of claim 3, wherein the expansion component includes a spring mechanism connecting the distal portion and the proximal portion, and wherein the spring mechanism is stretched when the at least one elongation balloon is inflated.

6. The device of claim 2, wherein the at least one anchoring component includes a distal anchoring component capable of anchoring the distal portion to the lead.

7. The device of claim 3, wherein the at least one anchoring component includes a proximal anchoring component capable of anchoring the proximal portion to the lead

8. The device of claim 7, further comprising a distal anchoring component that provides pressure on the lead that resists movement of the distal portion along the lead.

9. The device of claim 1, wherein the at least one anchoring component includes at least one anchoring balloon that provides pressure on the lead to resist movement when inflated.

10. The device of claim 3, wherein the expansion component is capable of forcing the distal portion forwards along the lead, and wherein the cutting component is coupled to the distal portion such that the cutting component is forced forwards along the lead by the expansion component.

11. The device of claim 10, further comprising a rotating component coupled to the cutting component, the rotating component capable of rotating the cutting portion when the distal portion is forced forward along the lead.

12. The device of claim 1, wherein the at least one anchoring component includes at least one expansion component, the at least one expansion component capable of advancing at least some of the body portion along the lead at least in part by applying fluid pressure.

The device of claim 12, wherein the at least one anchoring component and the at least one expansion component are formed from a plurality of connected balloons, each of the plurality of connected balloons, upon inflation, being capable of providing pressure on the lead that resists movement of at least part of the body portion along the lead and advances at least a part of the body portion along the lead.

14. A device for assisting in removing an implanted lead, the device comprising:

means for accommodating the lead via a center portion of the device;

means for separating tissue from the lead; and

means for providing pressure on the lead to resist movement of at least part of the device along the lead at least in part by applying fluid pressure.

15. The device of claim 14, further comprising means for advancing the device along the lead at least in part by applying fluid pressure.

16. The device of claim 15, further comprising means for rotating the means for separating tissue.

17. A method of operating a device adapted to assist in removing an implanted lead, the method comprising:

anchoring a first portion of the device at least in part by applying fluid pressure;

advancing a second portion of the device along the lead at least in part by applying fluid pressure;

releasing the first portion of the device; and

advancing the first portion of the device along the lead.

18. The method of claim 17, wherein releasing the first portion includes decreasing fluid pressure.

19. The method of claim 17, wherein advancing the first portion includes decreasing fluid pressure.

20. The method of claim 17, wherein advancing the first portion includes anchoring the second portion at least in part by applying fluid pressure.

21. The method of claim 17, wherein advancing the second portion includes advancing a cutting portion of the device along the lead.

22. The method of claim 21, wherein advancing the cutting portion includes rotating the cutting portion of the device.
