1. A display system comprising:
- a display screen;
a plurality of electromagnetic radiation emitters disposed at a periphery of the display screen;
a plurality of beam shapers, each to shape emissions from a separate one of the emitters into a fan beam pattern;
a plurality of detectors disposed at the periphery of the display screen to detect electromagnetic emissions of the emitters; and
a processor configured to determine a parameter descriptive of a touch event in which an object touches the display screen, based on outputs of the detectors.

Abstract
A touch screen display system combines the use of electromagnetic radiation emitters with shadow detection to determine the precise location or other touch related parameters of an object touching the display screen. In one embodiment the system comprises a display screen, a plurality of laser emitters disposed at a periphery of the display screen; a plurality of beam shapers to shape emissions from the emitters into fan beam patterns, and a plurality of detectors disposed at the periphery of the display screen to detect laser emissions of the laser emitters; and a processor to determine a location where an object touches the display screen, based on outputs of the detectors.

14. A display system comprising:
-
a display screen having a display surface with a plurality of corners and a plurality of edges; a plurality of laser emitters, each disposed at a different corner of the display surface, to emit laser light over the display surface; a plurality of optical waveguides, each to modify a radiation pattern of laser light from a different one of the laser emitters to be an approximately 90-degree pattern parallel and proximal to the display surface and to collimate said laser light in a direction perpendicular to the display surface; a plurality of optical detectors disposed in linear configurations along edges of the display surface, to detect laser light from the laser emitters via the optical waveguides; and a processor to determine a location where an object touches the display surface, based on outputs of the optical detectors, by determining locations of shadows of laser light cast upon two or more of the detectors. - View Dependent Claims (15, 16, 17, 18, 19)
