Abstract

The invention provides a system and method for percutaneous energy delivery in an effective, manner using one or more probes. Additional variations of the system include array of probes configured to minimize the energy required to produce the desired effect.

Claims

1. A system for monitoring energy delivering from an energy supply unit to a target tissue region, where the target tissue region comprises a plurality of tissue layers each having varying characteristics, the system comprising:

a treatment unit having a device body and a first plurality of energy transfer elements, where the device body includes a tissue engaging surface that allows orientation of the device body on the surface of tissue, the treatment unit further including a first plurality of energy transfer elements extending from the tissue engaging surface and each including an energy transfer portion configured to apply energy during a treatment cycle of the energy supply unit;

a connector adapted to couple the energy supply unit to the plurality of energy transfer elements; and

a graphical user interface coupled to the energy supply and energy transfer element, the graphical user interface comprising a tissue characteristic indicator configured to identify at least one characteristic of a tissue layer in which the energy transfer portion of the energy transfer element is located when the energy transfer elements are inserted into the target tissue for a treatment cycle.

2. The system of claim 1, where the tissue characteristic indicator identifies a characteristic selected from a group consisting of an impedance of the tissue layer, a temperature of the tissue layer, and a depth of the tissue layer.

3. The system of claim 1, where the tissue characteristic indictor comprises a visual tissue characteristic indicator.

4. The system of claim 1, where the power supply is configured to measure an impedance value of tissue adjacent to the energy transfer portion between at least two electrodes and where the tissue characteristic indicator is configured to identify the measured impedance value.

5. The system of claim 4, where the tissue characteristic indicator comprises a visual tissue indicator and is configured correlate the measured impedance value as the layer of tissue relative to at least another layer of tissue.

6. The system of claim 5, where at least a portion of the energy transfer elements are arranged in an array and where the visual tissue indicator depth indicator is configured to indicate the tissue layer in which each energy transfer element is located.

7. The system of claim 6, where the visual depth indicator is configured to display an angle of the array of energy transfer elements relative to the tissue engaging surface.

8. The system of claim 1, where the graphical user interface further comprises a treatment counter indicator configured to show a number of treatment cycles applied by the energy supply unit.

9. The system of claim 1, where the graphical user interface further comprises a temperature indicator configured to display a temperature of the energy transfer portions during the treatment cycle.

10. The system of claim 1, where the graphical user interface further includes a plurality of sub-target regions graphically identified on the display where each sub-target region identifies a target area on the target tissue for treatment.

11. The system of claim 10, where the graphical user interface is configured to permit an operator to select at least one of the sub-target regions.

12. The system of claim 10, where the energy supply unit adjusts at least one parameter based upon the selected sub-target region.

13. The system of claim 1, where the graphical user interface is configured to allow a user to adjust at least one parameter of the energy supply unit.

14. The system of claim 1, where the treatment unit further comprises a stabilization plate adjacent to the tissue engaging surface and being spaced from the plurality of energy transfer elements.

15. The system of claim 14, further comprising a cooling source coupled to the stabilization plate, such that a temperature of the stabilization plate maintains a temperature of the target tissue at, below, or slightly above body temperature.

16. The system of claim 15, where the graphical user interface further comprises a stabilization plate temperature indicator configured to display the temperature of the stabilization plate.

17. The system of claim 16, where the graphical user interface further comprises a warning indicator to identify the temperature of the stabilization plate being above a pre-determined value.

18. The system of claim 14, wherein the tissue engaging surface and stabilization plate are positioned such that when the tissue engaging surface is placed on the surface of tissue and the first plurality of energy transfer elements is advanced into the surface of tissue at an entry point, the first plurality of energy transfer elements enters the tissue at the oblique angle relative to the tissue surface while the tissue engaging surface and the stabilization plate reduce movement of the surface of tissue adjacent to the entry point

19. The system of claim 1, where the energy transfer elements are advanceable from the device body at an oblique angle relative to the tissue engaging surface.

20. The system of claim 1, where the treatment unit further comprises a cartridge body removably coupled to the device body, where at least the plurality of first energy transfer elements and the tissue engaging surface are located on or in the cartridge body.

21. The system of claim 19, where the cartridge body comprises a plurality of functional characteristics where the graphical user interface is configured to display at least one of the functional characteristics.

22. The system of claim 1, where the graphical user interface transfer elements are advanceable from the device body at an oblique angle relative to the tissue engaging surface.

23. The system of claim 22, where the graphical user interface is configured to indicate the energy transfer portion being in an epidermal region of the tissue if the measured impedance is less than 250 ohms.

24. The system of claim 22, where the graphical user interface is configured to indicate the energy transfer portion being in a subcutaneous region of tissue if the measured impedance is greater than 3000 ohms.

25. The system of claim 22, where the graphical user interface is configured to indicate the energy transfer portion being in a dermal region of tissue if the measured impedance is between 250 and 3000 ohms.

26. The system of claim 22, where the graphical user interface is configured to display a plurality of sequentially measured impedance values.
