Abstract

Embodiments of the invention are related to monitoring devices and methods with osmometric sensors, amongst other things. In an embodiment, the invention includes an implantable heart failure monitoring system including an implantable osmometric sensor configured to generate a signal corresponding to osmotic strength of a bodily fluid, the osmometric sensor comprising a rigid wall member defining an enclosed volume resisting deformation, the rigid wall member comprising a semi-permeable membrane; a signaling element comprising a first pressure sensor; and a second pressure sensor. Other aspects and embodiments are provided herein.

Claims

1. An implantable heart failure monitoring system comprising:

an implantable osmometric sensor configured to generate a signal corresponding to osmotic strength of a bodily fluid, the osmometric sensor comprising

a rigid wall member defining an enclosed volume resisting deformation, the rigid wall member comprising a semi-permeable membrane;

a signaling element comprising

a first pressure sensor; and

a second pressure sensor.

2. The implantable heart failure monitoring system of claim 1, the implantable osmometric sensor further comprising a lead and a first conductor, wherein the first conductor passes through the lead and provide communication with the signaling element.

3. The implantable heart failure monitoring system of claim 1, wherein the first pressure sensor and the second pressure sensors are selected from the group consisting of electrical, mechanical, and optical pressure sensors.

The implantable heart failure monitoring system of claim 1, wherein the first pressure sensor is configured to produce a signal corresponding to the pressure inside the enclosed volume and the second pressure sensor is configured to produce a signal corresponding to the pressure outside the enclosed volume.

5. The implantable heart failure monitoring system of claim 1, the second pressure sensor attached to the rigid wall member.

6. The implantable heart failure monitoring system of claim 1, wherein the second pressure sensor is disposed remotely from the first pressure sensor.

7. The implantable heart failure monitoring system of claim 6, wherein the second pressure sensor is configured to generate a wireless signal corresponding to pressure sensed by the second pressure sensor.

8. The implantable heart failure monitoring system of claim 6, further comprising a controller in communication with the implantable osmometric sensor, the controller configured to receive and process the signal corresponding to osmotic strength of the bodily fluid.

9. The implantable heart failure monitoring system of claim 8, the controller further configured to generate electrical stimulation pulses to be delivered to a target tissue.

10. The implantable heart failure monitoring system of claim 8, the controller configured to generate a warning notification if the osmotic strength of the bodily fluid falls below a preselected threshold level.

11. The implantable heart failure monitoring system of claim 8, the controller configured to modulate a cardiac pacing rate based on the signal generated by the osmometric sensor.

12. An implantable heart failure monitoring system comprising:

an implantable osmometric sensor configured to generate a signal corresponding to osmotic strength of a bodily fluid, the osmometric sensor comprising

a rigid wall member defining an enclosed volume resisting deformation, the rigid wall member comprising a semi-permeable membrane;

a signaling element comprising

a transducing structure comprising;

a first side;

a second side; and

a plurality of dimples configured to resist deformation until a threshold differential exists between the first side and second side of the transducing structure.

13. The implantable heart failure monitoring system of claim 12, wherein each of the plurality of dimples is configured to invert at different threshold pressure differentials.

14. The implantable heart failure monitoring system of claim 12, further comprising a controller in communication with the implantable osmometric sensor, the controller configured to receive and process the signal corresponding to osmotic strength of the bodily fluid.

15. The implantable heart failure monitoring system of claim 12, the controller further configured to generate electrical stimulation pulses to be delivered to a target tissue.

16. The implantable heart failure monitoring system of claim 12, the controller configured to generate a warning notification if the osmotic strength of the bodily fluid falls below a preselected threshold level.

17. The implantable heart failure monitoring system of claim 12, the controller configured to modulate a cardiac pacing rate based on the signal generated by the osmometric sensor.

18. An implantable osmotic heart failure monitoring system comprising:

an implantable osmometric sensor configured to generate a signal corresponding to osmotic strength of a bodily fluid, the osmometric sensor comprising

a wall member defining an enclosed volume, the wall member comprising a semi-permeable membrane, wherein the enclosed volume changes size as water passes into or out of the enclosed volume due to osmosis;

a first electrode disposed adjacent the wall member;

a second electrode disposed adjacent the wall member, wherein the first electrode and the second electrode are disposed on opposite sides of the enclosed volume; and

a solution comprising a solvent and a solute, the solution disposed within the enclosed volume.

19. The implantable osmotic heart monitoring system of claim 18, further comprising a controller in communication with the implantable osmometric sensor, the controller configured to process a signal corresponding to impedance between the first electrode and the second electrode.

20. The implantable osmotic heart monitoring system of claim 18, the controller further configured to derive osmotic strength based on impedance values between the first electrode and the second electrode.
