Abstract

A location reporting paging communication system comprising space satellites, ground stations and a remote receiving unit adapted to resolve a global position from signals transmitted from a communication transmitter. The subscriber in possession of the remote receiving unit updates the paging network with global positioning information. A caller paging a subscriber in possession of the remote receiving unit may request the global location of the remote receiving unit. The paging network could divulge or block such information from a caller depending on the requirements of the subscriber.

Claims

1. A communication system comprising:

(a) a network of signal transmitting and receiving units;

(b) a mobile remote unit able to communicate with said network to establish mobile remote unit location information at the network;

(c) a pool of signal transmitting and receiving units from said network preauthorized to be able to access said mobile remote unit location information from said network for a time;

(d) the system able to limit access to said mobile remote unit location information to at least one of said signal transmitting and receiving units selected from said pool while allowing access to other signal transmitting and receiving units of said pool during said time.

2. The system of claim 1 wherein the location of the mobile remote unit is tracked when access to mobile remote location has been denied to one of said signal transmitting and receiving unit selected from said pool.

3. The system according to claim 1, wherein the mobile remote unit is able to communicate with a positioning transmitter to establish its location at the network and also able to provide said network with location dependent information.

4. The system of claim 1, wherein the network is associated with one or more terrestrial control stations and satellite stations.

5. A method for providing or denying access to the location of a mobile device associated with a network comprising:

(a) receiving a request for the location of a mobile device from a pre-authorized source;

(b) identifying said pre-authorized source;

(c) providing said location to said pre-authorized source in response to said request while simultaneously denying access to said location to one or more other pre-authorized sources.

6. The method of claim 5, wherein said mobile device is a cellular telephone, handheld computing device, or a paging device.

7. The method of claim 5, wherein said pre-authorized source is a location based service.

8. The method of claim 7, wherein said location based service is a service that provides emergency assistance.

9. The method of claim 7, wherein said location based service is not a service that provides emergency assistance.

10. A communication system capable of providing access to information concerning the location of a mobile device, said system comprising:

(a) a network capable of communicating with a mobile device;

(b) a pool of location-based services associated with said network, some of which are pre-authorized to access the location of said mobile device;

(c) a resource associated with said network that is capable of allowing at least one pre-authorized location-based service to access the location of said mobile device while simultaneously denying at least one other pre-authorized location-based service access to said location.

11. The method of claim 10, wherein said mobile device is a cellular telephone, handheld computing device, or a paging device.

12. The method of claim 10, wherein said network comprises at least one of:

a cellular network and a network of space satellites.

13. The method of claim 10, wherein said at least one pre-authorized location based service is a service that provides emergency assistance.

14. The method of claim 10, wherein said at least one pre-authorized location based service is not a service that provides emergency assistance.
