Abstract

An embodiment of a method for rendering an item of media content includes obtaining a media presentation having a media-content portion and a display-window-configuration component. The display-window-configuration component is recovered from the media presentation and causes a defined display window to be presented contemporaneously with rendering the media content of the media-content portion. And an embodiment of a method for rendering an item of media content having an action-indicator associated with an action includes analyzing the media content to detect the action-indicator and executing the associated action. For example, the action-indicator may be a watermark, which may be visible while an image portion of the media content is displayed.

Claims

1. A method, comprising:

generating a media presentation file by combining an item of media content with a display-window-configuration component that defines a display window;

cryptographically binding the media presentation file; and

storing the media presentation file.

2. The method of claim 1, further wherein the cryptographic binding comprises encrypting the media presentation.

3. The method of claim 1, further wherein the cryptographic binding comprises a hash of at least part of the media presentation file.

4. The method of claim 1, wherein the media content comprises at least one of audio and video content.

5. A method, comprising:

recovering from a media presentation;

a media-content portion; and

a display-window-configuration component, wherein the media-content portion and display-window-configuration component are cryptographically bound;

unbinding and/or verifying the cryptographic binding;

responsive to the display-window-configuration component, generating a display window; and

rendering the media content.

6. The method of claim 5 wherein generating a display window comprises modifying a default display window and presenting the modified display window contemporaneous with rendering the media content.

7. The method of claim 5, further comprising rendering the media content within a portion the display window.

8. The method of claim 7, further comprising rendering advertisement content within another portion of the display window.

9. The method of claim 8, further comprising obtaining the advertising content from a remote source responsive to the display-window-configuration component.

10. The method of claim 5, wherein at least one of the cryptographically bound portions and/or components is or are encrypted and wherein unbinding and/or verifying the cryptographic binding further comprises decrypting the portion and/or component.

11. The method of claim 5, wherein the cryptographic binding comprises a hash computed across some or all of the portion and the component and wherein unbinding and/or verifying the cryptographic binding further comprises verifying a local computation of the hash against a reference hash.

12. The method of claim 5, further comprising sending data to a remote device in response to the display-window-configuration component.

13. The method of claim 12, further comprising:

receiving a media-content-presentation denial; and

responsive to the media-content-presentation denial, preventing rendering of the media content.

14. The method of claim 5, further comprising sending a display-window-modification query to a remote location.

15. The method of claim 5, further comprising:

obtaining display-window-modification data; and

modifying a default display window based on the obtained display-window-modification data.

16. The method of claim 15, wherein the display-window-modification data comprises instructions to modify the default display window.

17. The method of claim 15, wherein the display-window-modification data comprises media and wherein the default display window is modified to present the media.

18. The method of claim 15, wherein the modification data comprises a URL wherein the default display window is modified to include the URL and/or a rendered content portion which may be clicked on or otherwise activated by a user to obtain data from a data source associated with the URL.

19. A computer system for presenting a media presentation comprising:

a display, and

a processor operable to;

recover from a media presentation;

a media content portion; and

a display-window-configuration component, wherein the media-content portion and display-window-configuration component are cryptographically bound; and

responsive to the display-window-configuration component, generate a display window on the display and render the media content on the display.

20. The computer system of claim 19, wherein the processor is further operable to initiate sending a display-window-modification query, responsive to the display-window-configuration component, to a remote location.

21. The computer system of claim 20, wherein the processor is further operable to modify a default display window based on obtained display-window-modification data, and present the modified display window on the display.

22. The computer system of claim 21, wherein the display-window-modification data comprises instructions to modify the default display window.

23. The computer system of claim 21, wherein the display-window-modification data comprises media and wherein the default display window is modified to present the media.

24. The computer system of claim 21, wherein the display-window-modification data comprises a URL and wherein the default display window is modified to include the URL.

25. The computer system of claim 19, wherein the display-window-configuration component is configured to be auto-run by the processor after being recovered.

26. The computer system of claim 19, wherein the display-window-configuration component initiates obtaining display window updates and modifying a default display window in response to obtained display window updates.

27. The computer system of claim 19, wherein the display-window-configuration component is configured to initiate preventing rendering of the media content if a media presentation denial is obtained.

28. The computer system of claim 19, wherein the media content comprises audio media content.

29. The computer system of claim 19, wherein the processor is further operable to modify rendering of the media content responsive to the display-window-configuration component.

30. The computer system of claim 29, wherein modification of the rendering of the media content comprises adding additional video content to one of the beginning, middle, or end of a video.

31. The computer system of claim 19, wherein the cryptographically bound media-content portion and display-window-configuration component are encrypted in whole or in part and wherein recovering the portion and the component further comprises decrypting the portion and component.

32. The computer system of claim 19, wherein the cryptographically bound media-content portion and display-window-configuration component have had a reference hash computed across them and wherein recovering the portion and the component further comprises computing a hash of component and portion and comparing the computed hash to the reference hash.

33. A tangible computer readable medium comprising:

a media presentation including;

a display-window-configuration component configured to cause a media player to present a modified version of a default display window contemporaneously with rendering of the media content on a host computer; and

an item of media content, wherein the item of media content and display-window-configuration component are cryptographically bound.

34. The tangible computer readable medium of claim 33, wherein the media content is at least one of audio and video media content.

35. The tangible computer readable medium of claim 33, wherein the media presentation is encrypted.

36. The tangible computer readable medium of claim 33, wherein the cryptographic binding comprises at least one of i) a reference hash computed across the item of media content and the display-window-configuration component and ii) an encryption of at least one of the item of media content and the display-window-configuration component.

37. The tangible computer readable medium of claim 33, wherein the display-window-configuration component is configured to auto-run after being recovered from the media presentation.

38. A method, comprising:

detecting an action-indicator in an item of media content;

determining at least one action associated with the action-indicator;

performing the at least one determined action; and

presenting the media content.

39. The method of claim 38, wherein detecting the action-indicator comprises analyzing at least one visual frame of the media content to determine if a visual watermark is present in the at least one visual frame.

40. The method of presenting media as in claim 39, wherein the visual watermark is located in a defined location and wherein detecting the visual watermark comprises analyzing the defined location.

41. The method of presenting media as in claim 39, wherein the visual watermark is located in one of a plurality of defined locations and wherein the detecting the visual watermark comprises analyzing the defined plurality of locations.

42. The method of presenting media as in claim 39, wherein the watermark comprises alphanumeric characters.

43. The method of presenting media as in claim 39, wherein the watermark is a non-visual watermark.

44. The method of presenting media as in claim 39, wherein the watermark comprises a URL indication.

45. The method of presenting media as in claim 38, further comprising rendering the media content, wherein the detecting, determining and performing occur contemporaneous with rendering the media content.

46. The method of presenting media as in claim 38, wherein the at least one action comprises modifying a default display window and presenting the modified display window;

and

the method further comprising rendering the media content in a portion of modified display window.

47. The method of presenting media as in claim 46, wherein modifying the default display window comprises presenting display window media in another portion of the display window.

48. The method of presenting media as in claim 46, wherein modifying the default display window and presenting the modified display window occurs contemporaneous with rendering of the media content.

49. The method of presenting media as in claim 38, wherein the determining comprises communication with a remote server defined by the watermark and obtaining at least one action from the remote server.

50. A computer system comprising:

a processor configured to;

detect an action-indicator in an item of media content;

determine at least one action associated with the action-indicator; and

perform the at least one determined action.

51. The computer system of claim 50, wherein detecting the action-indicator comprises analyzing at least one visual frame the media content to determine if a visual watermark is present in the at least one visual frame.

52. The computer system of claim 51 further comprising a display, and wherein the processor is further configured to render the media content on the display contemporaneous with the detecting, determining and performing.

53. The computer system as in claim 51, wherein the visual watermark is located in a defined location and wherein the detecting the visual watermark comprises analyzing the defined location.

54. The computer system as in claim 51, wherein the visual watermark is located in one of a plurality of defined locations and wherein the detecting the visual watermark comprises analyzing the defined plurality of locations.

55. The computer system as in claim 51, wherein the watermark comprises alphanumeric characters.

56. The computer system as in claim 51, wherein the watermark is associated with a URL.

57. The computer system as in claim 50, wherein the at least one action comprises an instruction to modify a default display window and present the modified display window, wherein the media content is contemporaneously rendered in a portion of the modified display window.

58. The computer system as in claim 50, wherein determining the at least one action comprises the computer system communicating with a remote server defined by the watermark and obtaining at least one action from the remote server.

59. The computer system as in claim 50, wherein executing the at least one determined action comprises:

obtaining display window media content from a remote location; and

presenting the display window media content in a display window contemporaneous with rendering of the media content in a portion of the display window.

60. The computer system of claim 50, wherein the media content comprises audio media content.

61. The computer system of claim 50, wherein the processor is further operable to modify rendering of the media content responsive to the display-window-configuration component.

62. The computer system of claim 61, wherein modification of the rendering of the media content comprises adding additional video content to one of the beginning, middle, or end of a video.

63. A tangible computer readable medium, that when read by a computer is configured to cause the computer to:

detect an action-indicator in an item of media content;

determine at least one action associated with the action-indicator; and

perform the at least one determined action.

64. The tangible computer readable medium of claim 63, wherein detecting the action-indicator comprises analyzing at least one visual frame the media content to determine if a visual watermark is present in the at least one visual frame.
