Abstract

A method for controlling a sleep mode operation by a Mobile Station (MS) in a communication system. The MS includes transitioning to an awake state in a listening interval of the sleep mode; performing any one of a first operation, a second operation and a third operation in the awake state; and after any one operation is performed, transitioning to a sleep state upon detecting that there is no data to transmit to the BS and there is no data to be received from the BS. The first operation is a process of receiving data from the BS, the second operation is a process of transmitting data to the BS, and the third operation is a process of receiving data from the BS and receiving data from the BS.

Claims

1. A method for controlling a sleep mode operation by a Mobile Station (MS) in a communication system, the method comprising:

when there is no data that the MS transmits or receives to/from a Base Station (BS) for a preset number of frames from an A-th frame of a listening interval, operating in a sleep state from a B-th frame corresponding to a preset number after the A-th frame, wherein the sleep mode is divided into the listening interval corresponding to an awake state and a sleep window corresponding to the sleep state, and the listening interval and the sleep window are divided on a frame-by-frame basis; and

operating in a listening state during the preset number of frames from a (C+1)-th frame, when the MS transmits or receives data to/from the BS in a C-th frame of the listening interval.

2. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

receiving a Traffic Indication (TRF-IND) message from the BS in a frame where the listening interval begins, wherein the TRF-IND message includes information indicating existence/nonexistence of data that the MS will receive from the BS.

3. The method of claim 2, wherein the information is an identifier of the MS.

4. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

transmitting a bandwidth request message to the BS, when the MS needs to transmit data to the BS in the sleep window.

5. The method of claim 1, wherein a unit of the frame is a preset time.

6. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

transitioning to the sleep state, when the MS receives a transition request message to the sleep state from the BS while operating in the listening state.

7. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

transitioning to the listening state, when the MS receives a transition request message to the listening state from the BS while operating in the sleep state.

8. A method for controlling a sleep mode operation by a Base Station (BS) in a communication system, the method comprising:

when there is no data that the BS transmits or receives to/from a Mobile Station (MS) for a preset number of frames in a listening interval of the MS, recognizing that the MS operates in a sleep state, wherein the sleep mode is divided into a listening interval corresponding to an awake state and a sleep window corresponding to the sleep state, and the listening interval and the sleep window are divided on a frame-by-frame basis; and

recognizing that the MS operates in a listening state during the preset number of frames from an (n+1)-th frame, when the BS transmits or receives data to/from the MS in an n-th frame of the listening interval of the MS.

9. The method of claim 8, further comprising:

broadcasting a Traffic Indication (TRF-IND) message in a frame where the listening interval begins, wherein the TRF-IND message includes information indicating existence/nonexistence of data that the BS will transmit to the MS.

10. The method of claim 9, wherein the information is an identifier of the MS.

11. The method of claim 8, further comprising:

transmitting a transition request message to the listening state to the MS, when the BS needs to transmit data to the MS in the sleep window of the MS.

12. The method of claim 8, wherein a unit of the frame is a preset time.

13. The method of claim 8, further comprising:

transmitting a message granting transition to the sleep state, when the BS receives a transition request message to the sleep state from the MS while the MS is operating in the listening state.

14. The method of claim 8, further comprising:

granting uplink data transmission of the MS, when the BS receives a bandwidth request message from the MS while the MS is operating in the sleep state.

15. A method for controlling a sleep mode operation by a Mobile Station (MS) in a communication system, the method comprising:

transitioning to the sleep mode when the MS receives a sleep mode request message from a Base Station (BS), wherein the sleep mode is divided into a listening interval corresponding to an awake state and a sleep window corresponding to a sleep state, and the listening interval and the sleep window are divided on a frame-by-frame basis;

setting a timer to an initial value in an N-th frame where no data transmission or reception occurs, among frames of the listening interval;

increasing the initial value of the timer, which was set in the N-th frame, by 1 for each frame until a previous frame of a frame where data transmission or reception occurs; and

operating in the sleep state from an (M+1)-th frame, when the increased timer value reaches a preset threshold in an M-th frame.

16. The method of claim 15, further comprising:

receiving a Traffic Indication (TRF-IND) message from the BS in a frame where the listening interval begins, wherein the TRF-IND message includes information indicating existence/nonexistence of data that the MS will receive from the BS.

17. The method of claim 15, further comprising:

resetting the timer value to an initial value in a frame where data transmission or reception occurs, among frames of the listening interval.

18. The method of claim 15, further comprising:

transmitting a bandwidth request message to the BS, when the MS needs to transmit data to the BS in the sleep window.

19. The method of claim 15, wherein a unit of the frame is a preset time.
