1. A method of identifying available wideband channels for use by a narrowband communication system by a base station of the narrowband communication system, the method comprising:

  • identifying a plurality of subscriber units of the narrowband communication system in a geographic region, including identifying a location of each of the plurality of subscriber units as reported by the subscriber units;

    assigning a narrowband measurement regime to each of the plurality of subscriber units, wherein the narrowband measurement regime identifies at least one narrowband channel to be measured by the subscriber unit in an assigned wideband channel using a narrowband measurement performed in the assigned wideband channel;

    receiving measurement results from the plurality of subscriber units, wherein the measurement results are obtained by the subscriber units upon performing their respective measurement regime; and

    determining an availability of wideband channels based at least in part on the measurement results.
