Abstract

The present invention relates generally to systems and methods for measuring an analyte in a host. More particularly, the present invention relates to systems and methods for transcutaneous measurement of glucose in a host.

Claims

1. A method for calibrating a continuous glucose sensor, comprising:

receiving sensor data from a continuous glucose sensor, wherein the sensor data is indicative of a glucose concentration in a host;

receiving predetermined calibration information, wherein the predetermined calibration information comprises sensitivity information associated with the continuous glucose sensor, and wherein the sensitivity information is derived from in vivo testing of at least one other continuous glucose sensor; and

calibrating the continuous glucose sensor based on the predetermined calibration information.

2. The method of claim 1, further comprising receiving reference data from a reference glucose monitor, wherein the calibrating is further based on the reference data.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein the predetermined calibration information further comprises baseline information, and wherein the baseline information is derived from in vivo testing of at least one other continuous glucose sensor.

4. The method of claim 3, wherein the sensitivity information is further derived from in vitro testing.

5. The method of claim 1, wherein the sensor data comprises a first signal associated with glucose and non-glucose related electroactive compounds and a second signal associated with substantially only non-glucose related electroactive compounds.

6. The method of claim 5, further comprising subtracting the second signal from the first signal to obtain a differential signal indicative of a glucose concentration.

7. The method of claim 6, wherein the calibrating is further based on the differential signal.

8. The method of claim 7, wherein the calibrating is performed without reference data from a reference glucose monitor.

9. The method of claim 5, further comprising comparing the first signal and the second signal to measure a change in baseline or a change in sensitivity.

10. The method of claim 9, wherein the calibrating is further based on the change in baseline or the change in sensitivity.

11. A system for calibrating a continuous glucose sensor, comprising:

a continuous glucose sensor configured to provide sensor data indicative of a glucose concentration in a host; and

a processor module configured to calibrate the sensor data based on predetermined calibration information, wherein the predetermined calibration information comprises sensitivity information associated with the continuous glucose sensor, and wherein the sensitivity information is derived from in vivo testing of at least one other continuous glucose sensor.

12. The system of claim 11, wherein the processor module is further configured to calibrate the sensor data based on reference data from a reference glucose monitor.

13. The system of claim 11, wherein the predetermined calibration information further comprises baseline information, and wherein the predetermined baseline information is derived from in vivo testing of at least one other continuous glucose sensor.

14. The system of claim 13, wherein the predetermined sensitivity information is derived from in vitro testing.

15. The system of claim 11, wherein the sensor comprises a first electrode and a second electrode, and wherein the sensor data comprises a first signal associated with glucose and non-glucose related electroactive compounds measured at the first electrode and a second signal associated with substantially only non-glucose related electroactive compounds measured at the second electrode.

16. The system of claim 15, wherein the processor module is configured to subtract the second signal from the first signal to obtain a differential signal indicative of a glucose concentration without substantial contribution from non-glucose related electroactive compounds.

17. The system of claim 16, wherein the processor module is further configured to calibrate the sensor data based on the differential signal.

18. The system of claim 17, wherein the processor module is further configured to calibrate the sensor data without reference data from a reference glucose monitor.

19. The system of claim 15, wherein the processor module is configured to compare the first signal and the second signal to measure a change in baseline or a change in sensitivity.

20. The system of claim 19, wherein the processor module is further configured to calibrate the sensor data based on the change in baseline or the change in sensitivity.

21. The system of claim 11, further comprising:

a transmitter unit operably coupled to the glucose sensor, the transmitter unit having a radio frequency transmitter configured to wirelessly transmit sensor data; and

a receiver unit comprising a radio frequency receiver and a display, the radio frequency receiver configured to receive the transmitted sensor data and the display configured to display information based on the transmitted sensor data.

22. The system of claim 21, wherein the processor module is incorporated in the transmitter unit and the transmitted sensor data is calibrated sensor data.

23. A system for calibrating a continuous glucose sensor, comprising:

a continuous glucose sensor configured to provide sensor data indicative of a glucose concentration in a host; and

a processor module configured to calibrate the sensor data based on predetermined calibration information, wherein the predetermined calibration information comprises sensitivity information and baseline information associated with the continuous glucose sensor, and wherein the predetermined calibration information is derived from in vivo testing of at least one other continuous glucose sensor.

24. The system of claim 23, wherein the processor module is further configured to calibrate the sensor data without reference data from a reference glucose monitor.
