Abstract

Imaging of a left or right joint is performed preoperatively, and an alignment guide and a custom cutting guide are formed based on the imaging. The alignment guide includes cannulations into which pins are placed. The cutting guide is then aligned using the pins, and bone of the joint is cut, using the guide, in preparation for an implant operative to replace a portion of the joint. The cutting guide is provided with one or more slots or surfaces to aid in aligning a cutting instrument. The alignment guide or cutting guide may be modified to correct for an existing joint problem, for example an incorrect alignment of the joint. The alignment guide or cutting guide may be formed with polymeric material.

Claims

1. A method of replacing at least a portion of a joint in a patient, comprising:

positioning an alignment guide on a diseased or damaged articular surface of a bone of the joint, wherein the alignment guide is custom fabricated for the patient based on imaging information of the joint and includes cannulations, each cannulation configured and dimensioned to receive a pin;

positioning a cutting guide having a guide surface, the positioning of the cutting guide based on at least two pins; and

cutting at least a portion of the articular surface of the bone of the joint by moving a cutting tool along a guide surface of the cutting guide.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein the cutting guide includes a slot.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein the guide surface of the cutting guide forms a captured slot.

4. The method of claim 1, wherein the alignment guide is configured and dimensioned to correct a physical defect of the patient.

5. The method of claim 1, wherein the alignment guide corrects alignment of the joint based on mechanical axis alignment.

6. The method of claim 1, wherein the cutting guide is not custom fabricated based on imaging information of the joint.

7. The method of claim 1, wherein the alignment guide is custom fabricated for only one of either the left or right side of the patient'"'"'s body.

8. The method of claim 1, wherein the cutting guide is dimensioned for only one of either the left or right side of the patient'"'"'s body.

9. The method of claim 1, wherein the alignment guide is custom fabricated using a polymer.

10. The method of claim 1, wherein the alignment guide is custom fabricated for the patient based on imaging information of the patient'"'"'s joint, the imaging performed pre-operatively.

11. The method of claim 1, wherein the articular surface of the bone cut contains holes formed by said at least two pins.

12. The method of claim 1, wherein the cutting guide is offset from an axis of the joint.

13. The method of claim 1, wherein the imaging information of the joint includes preoperative imaging information.

14. The method of claim 2, wherein the cutting guide includes a plurality of slots.

15. A method of replacing at least a portion of a joint in a patient, comprising:

positioning an alignment guide on a diseased or damaged articular surface of a bone of the joint, wherein the alignment guide is custom fabricated for the patient based on imaging information of the joint and, the alignment guide having a guide surface for a cutting instrument;

guiding at least a portion of a cutting instrument along said guide surface and cutting bone of the joint.

16. The method of claim 15, wherein the guide surface forms a slot.

17. The method of claim 15, wherein the guide surface forms a captured slot.

18. The method of claim 15, wherein the alignment guide is configured and dimensioned to correct a physical defect of the patient.

19. The method of claim 15, wherein the alignment guide corrects alignment of the joint based on mechanical axis alignment.

20. The method of claim 15, wherein the alignment guide is custom fabricated for only one of either the left or right side of the patient'"'"'s body.

21. The method of claim 15, wherein the alignment guide is custom fabricated using a polymer.

22. The method of claim 15, wherein the alignment guide is custom fabricated for the patient based on imaging information of the patient'"'"'s joint, the imaging performed pre-operatively.

23. The method of claim 15, wherein positioning the alignment guide includes cannulations for receiving at least two pins;

and the unresected bone cut includes one or more holes for receiving the pins.

24. A method of replacing at least a portion of a joint in a patient, comprising:

positioning an alignment guide on an articular surface of a bone of the joint, wherein the alignment guide is custom fabricated for the patient based on imaging information of the joint, the alignment guide having at least two cannulations therethrough;

forming apertures in bone, using the at least two cannulations;

removing the alignment guide from the articular surface;

aligning a cutting guide using the formed apertures;

cutting the articular surface of the bone of the joint by moving a cutting tool along a guide surface of the cutting guide.

25. The method of claim 24, wherein the guide surface forms a slot.

26. The method of claim 24, wherein the guide surface forms a captured slot.

27. The method of claim 24, wherein the alignment guide is configured and dimensioned to correct a physical defect of the patient.

28. The method of claim 24, wherein the alignment guide is dimensioned and configured to align a joint dimension selected from the group consisting of:

mechanical axis alignment, rotational alignment, implant size, slope, and combinations thereof

29. The method of claim 24, wherein the cutting guide is not custom fabricated based on imaging information of the joint.

30. The method of claim 24, wherein the alignment guide is custom fabricated for only one of either the left or right side of the patient'"'"'s body.

31. The method of claim 24, wherein the cutting guide is dimensioned for only one of either the left or right side of the patient'"'"'s body.

32. The method of claim 24, wherein the alignment guide is custom fabricated using a polymer.

33. The method of claim 24, wherein the alignment guide is custom fabricated for the patient based on imaging information of the patient'"'"'s joint, the imaging performed pre-operatively.

34. The method of claim 24, wherein pins are inserted in the apertures in the bone.

35. The method of claim 24, wherein the cutting guide is offset from an axis of joint.
