Abstract

An automated banking machine controlled responsive to data bearing records includes a card reader that can read identifying data from user cards. User operation of the automated banking machine is authorized responsive to the identifying data read by the card reader. The automated banking machine is allowed temporary usage of a machine application that enables the machine to perform an authorized banking transaction requiring operation of the card reader.

Claims

1. Apparatus comprising:

an automated banking machine of a banking system,

wherein the automated banking machine includes a card reader,

wherein the automated banking machine includes at least one computer in operative connection with the card reader,

wherein the at least one computer is operative to access a card reader controlling application from at least one server,

wherein the card reader controlling application is operative to control operation of the card reader,

 

wherein the card reader controlling application is operative to cause the card reader to read card data corresponding to a financial account from a card of a user of the automated banking machine,

 

wherein responsive at least in part to computer-determined correspondence between the card data read by the card reader and stored card information, the user is authorized to use the automated banking machine to carry out a transaction,

 

wherein the card reader controlling application includes expiration instructions,

 

wherein the expiration instructions allow operation of the card reader to be controlled by the card reader controlling application only during a predetermined time period,

 

wherein outside of the predetermined time period the card reader controlling application is no longer operative to control operation of the card reader,

wherein the at least one computer is operative to cause the financial account corresponding to card data read by the card reader to be assessed an amount corresponding to a value associated with the transaction.

2. A method comprising:

(a) providing a reader device-controlling application on at least one server,

wherein the reader device-controlling application includes computer instructions that are executable by at least one computer of a banking system automated banking machine including a card reader, to control the card reader during a banking transaction to read card data corresponding to a financial account from a card of a user of the automated banking machine; and

(b) operatively connecting the at least one server and the at least one computer in exchange for payment to an entity associated with controlling access to the at least one server,

wherein the operative connection enables the automated banking machine to access from the at least one server, the reader device-controlling application only during a temporary basis, a duration of which corresponds to the payment,

wherein the reader device-controlling application when accessed by the at least one computer controls the card reader in reading respective cards for a plurality of respective users of the automated banking machine.

3. The method according to claim 2

wherein the automated banking machine is part of a banking system including a plurality of automated banking machines, wherein each automated banking machine includes a card reader, a biometric reader, and a cash dispenser,

wherein the reader device-controlling application provided in step (a) includes further computer instructions that are executable by the at least one computer to control the biometric reader during a banking transaction to read user biometric data,

and further comprising:

(c) operating the automated banking machine to access the reader device-controlling application from the at least one server;

(d) operating the at least one computer in executing instructions accessed in step (c), to control at least one of

the card reader to read user card data; and

the biometric reader to read user biometric data,

wherein for each automated banking machine, a user is authorized to use the automated banking machine to carry out a cash dispensing transaction responsive at least in part to at least one of

computer-determined correspondence between read card data and stored card information, and

computer-determined correspondence between read biometric data and stored biometric information.

4. The method according to claim 2 and further comprising:

(c) operating the automated banking machine to download at least a portion of the reader device-controlling application, wherein the portion includes card reader controlling software,

wherein the card reader controlling software permits the at least one computer to operate the card reader,

wherein the card reader controlling software includes expiration instructions,

wherein the expiration instructions permit operational usage of the portion by the at least one computer only during a predetermined time period.

5. The method according to claim 4 and further comprising:

(d) subsequent to step (c), preventing operational usage of the portion by the at least one computer responsive to the expiration instructions, wherein the preventing occurs outside of the predetermined time period.

6. The method according to claim 2 and further comprising:

(c) operating the automated banking machine to access the reader device-controlling application from the at least one server;

(d) sending to an administrator of the automated banking machine from the entity, a service charge for the accessing in step (c).

7. The method according to claim 6 wherein step (d) includes sending to the administrator, a service charge for each occurrence the automated banking machine accesses the reader device-controlling application.

8. The method according to claim 6 and further comprising:

(e) responsive at least in part to step (d), receiving payment from the administrator for the accessing in step (c).

9. The method according to claim 8 wherein the payment in step (b) corresponds to a right to access the reader device-controlling application, wherein the payment in step (e) corresponds to a usage of the right.

10. The method according to claim 2 wherein the automated banking machine includes a cash dispenser, wherein step (a) includes providing a reader device-controlling application that includes computer instructions operative to both

control operation of the cash dispenser to dispense cash from the automated banking machine to the user;

and

cause the financial account to be assessed an amount corresponding to a value associated with the dispensed cash.

11. A method comprising:

(a) providing at least one automated banking machine card reader transaction-controlling application on at least one server,

wherein the at least one application includes computer executable automated banking machine instructions, executable by at least one computer of a banking system automated banking machine that includes a cash dispenser and at least one reader device, to control the machine in carrying out transaction steps which include;

(i) operating the at least one reader device to read user data corresponding to a financial account of a user of the machine;

(ii) operating the cash dispenser to dispense cash from the machine to the user; and

(iii) causing the financial account to be assessed an amount corresponding to a value associated with the dispensed cash; and

(b) operatively connecting the at least one server and the machine,

wherein the operative connection enables the machine to access the at least one application from the at least one server in exchange for payment to an entity associated with the at least one server,

wherein the at least one application when accessed by the machine controls the machine,

only during a temporary basis, a duration of which corresponds to the payment,

in carrying out steps (i)-(iii) for a plurality of users of the machine.

12. The method according to claim 11 wherein the at least one reader device includes a card reader and a biometric reader,

wherein (ai) includes both

operating the card reader to read user card data, and

operating the biometric reader to read user biometric data.

13. The method according to claim 11 wherein the at least one application when accessed by the machine causes the machine to carry out steps (i)-(iii).

14. The method according to claim 11 and further comprising:

(c) receiving payment for a right of the machine to access the at least one application.

15. The method according to claim 14 and further comprising:

(d) receiving payment for the machine exercising the right.

16. The method according to claim 11 and further comprising:

(c) receiving payment in exchange for the machine accessing the at least one application from the at least one server.

17. The method according to claim 11 and further comprising:

(c) subsequent to the temporary basis, operatively disconnecting the at least one server and the machine.

18. A method comprising:

(a) operating at least one server to allow a plurality of automated banking machines to temporary access at least one software application on the at least one server,

wherein the plurality of automated banking machines include a first machine which includes at least one computer, a card reader, and a cash dispenser,

wherein the first machine is affiliated with an administrator entity,

wherein the at least one software application includes computer executable instructions operative to control the first machine in;

(i) operating the card reader to read data corresponding to a financial account from a card of a user of the first machine;

(ii) operating the cash dispenser to dispense cash from the first machine to the user; and

(iii) causing the financial account to be assessed an amount corresponding to a value associated with the dispensed cash; and

(b) assessing by a service entity affiliated with the at least one server, a service fee to the administrator entity responsive at least in part to the first machine accessing the at least one software application from the at least one server.

19. The method according to claim 18 wherein step (b) is repeated each time the first machine accesses the at least one software application, and further comprising:

(c) repeating step (b).

20. The method according to claim 18 and further comprising:

(c) assessing by the service entity, an access fee to the administrator entity;

wherein the access fee grants to the first machine, permission to access the at least one software application during a predetermined temporary time period,

wherein the allowing of the first machine to temporary access the at least one software application in step (a) is responsive at least in part to step (c).
