Abstract

New capabilities will allow conventional broadcast transmission to be available to mobile devices. A method is described including receiving a data set, extracting a subset, encoding the subset using a first encoding process, combining the encoded subset with the remaining portion, and encoding the combined data set including the appended subset using a second encoding process. an apparatus is described including means for extracting a subset, means for first encoding, means for combining, and means for second encoding. An apparatus for decoding includes a data identifier receiving a data set and identifying a subset of data, a first decoder decoding the subset using a first decoding process, and a second decoder combining the subset of data with a remaining portion of the data set and decoding the combined data using a second decoding process. A method for decoding is also described.

Claims

1. A method comprising the steps of:

receiving a data set;

extracting a subset of the data set;

encoding the subset of the data set using a first encoding process;

combining the encoded subset of the data set with the remaining portion of the data set; and

encoding the combined data set including the appended subset using a second encoding process.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein the first encoding process is a byte code encoding process.

3. The method of claim 2, wherein the byte code encoding process uses a Galois Field generator matrix to supplement the data in the subset of the data set.

4. The method of claim 1, wherein the step of combining includes appending the encoded subset of the data set to the remaining portion of the data set.

5. The method of claim 1, wherein the second encoding process is a Reed-Solomon encoding process.

6. The method of claim 1, wherein the step of encoding using a first encoding process includes encoding at a first encoding rate.

7. The method of claim 6, further comprising the steps of:

extracting a second subset of the data set;

encoding the second subset of the data set using the first encoding process, wherein encoding the second subset using the first encoding process includes encoding at a second encoding rate; and

combining the second encoded subset of data with the combined data set.

8. The method of claim 1, wherein the first encoding process is Serial Concatenated Block Coding over a Galois Field.

9. The method of claim 1 wherein the received data set is arranged in packets, each packet including 187 bytes of data

10. The method of claim 1, further comprising the step of transmitting the combined data.

11. The method of claim 1, wherein the step of combining includes inserting at least a portion of the subset of the data set within the remaining portion of the data set.

12. The method of claim 1, wherein the method is used in a broadcast television system.

13. A method comprising the steps of:

encoding a first data set using a first encoding process;

combining the encoded first data set with a second data set to produce a combined data set; and

encoding the combined data set using a second encoding process.

14. The method of claim 13, wherein the first encoding process is a byte-code encoding process.

15. The method of claim 14, wherein the byte code encoding process uses a Galois Field generator matrix to supplement the data in the first data set.

16. The method of claim 13, wherein the second encoding process is a Reed-Solomon encoding process.

17. The method of claim 13, wherein the step of encoding using a first encoding process includes encoding at a first encoding rate.

18. The method of claim 17, further comprising the steps of:

encoding a third data set using the first encoding process, wherein the third data set is encoded at a second encoding rate; and

combining the third encoded data set with the combined data set.

19. The method of claim 13, wherein the step of combining includes appending the encoded first data set to the second data set.

20. The method of claim 13, wherein the first encoding process is Serial Concatenated Block Coding over a Galois Field.

21. The method of claim 13 wherein the first data set and the second data set are arranged in packets, each packet including 187 bytes of data

22. The method of claim 13, wherein the method is used in a television broadcast system.

23. An apparatus comprising:

means for extracting a subset of a data set;

means for encoding the subset of the data set using a first encoding process;

means for combining the encoded subset of the data set with the remaining portion of the data set; and

means for encoding the combined data set including the appended subset using a second encoding process.

24. The apparatus of claim 23 wherein the means for encoding the subset of the data set includes the means for encoding the subset of the data at a first encoding rate and a second encoding rate.

26. The apparatus of claim 23 wherein the means for encoding the subset of the plurality of packets includes the means for encoding the subset of the data at a first encoding rate and a second encoding rate.

25. An apparatus comprising:

means for encoding a first data set using a first encoding process;

means for combining the encoded first data set with a second data set to produce a combined data set; and

means for encoding the combined data set using a second encoding process.

27. An apparatus comprising:

a data identifier, the data identifier receiving a data set and identifying a subset of data from the data set;

a first decoder coupled to the data identifier, the first decoder receiving the subset of data and decoding the subset of data using a first decoding process; and

a second decoder coupled to the first decoder, the second decoder combining the subset of data with a remaining portion of the data set and decoding the combined data using a second decoding process.

28. The apparatus of claim 27, wherein the received data set is arranged in packets, each packet including 207 bytes of data.

29. The apparatus of claim 27, wherein the subset of data in the data set is mobile broadcast data.

30. The apparatus of claim 27, wherein the remaining portion of data in the data set is legacy broadcast data for television.

31. The apparatus of claim 27, wherein the first decoding process is a byte-code decoding process.

32. The apparatus of claim 27, wherein the first decoding process is a Galois Field Serial Concatenated Block Code decoding process.

33. The apparatus of claim 27, wherein the second decoding process is a Reed-Solomon decoding process.

34. A method comprising:

receiving a data set;

identifying a subset of data in the data set;

decoding the subset of data using a first decoding process; and

combining the decoded subset with a remaining portion of the data set; and

decoding the combining data using a second decoding process.

35. The method of claim 34, further comprising the step of processing the decoded combined data to generate a data stream for a mobile receiver.

36. The method of claim 34, wherein the received data set is arranged in packets, each packet including 207 bytes of data.

37. The method of claim 34, wherein the remaining portion of data in the data set is legacy broadcast data for television.

38. The method of claim 34, wherein the first decoding process is a byte-code decoding process.

39. The method of claim 34, wherein the first decoding process is a Galois Field Serial Concatenated Block Code decoding process.

40. The method of claim 34, wherein the second decoding process is a Reed-Solomon decoding process.
