Abstract

A method is provided for determining user availability on the basis of the manner in which a person uses (1) a communication terminal or (2) a computing device that is associated with the communication terminal or (3) any combination of (1) and (2). User availability is determined based on: (1) a characteristic of the use of a software application that is running on a computing device, or (2) a characteristic of the use of a feature of software that is running on a communication terminal, or (3) a characteristic of the use of a resource of a computing device, or (4) a characteristic of the use of a resource of a terminal, or (5) a sensor input, or (6) a characteristic of the incoming invitation, or (7) any combination of (1), (2), (3), (4), (5), and (6).

Claims

1. A method comprising:

receiving, at a communication network node, an invitation for a communication session; and

forwarding the invitation for the communication session from the communication network node to a communication terminal, wherein the forwarding task depends on a characteristic of the use of a first component of a software application.

2. The method of claim 1 wherein the software application is executing on a computing device that is associated with the communication terminal.

3. The method of claim 1 wherein:

the software application is executing on the communication terminal; and

the first component of the software application is not needed by the communication terminal for the conduct of the communication session for which an invitation is received.

4. The method of claim 1 comprising:

determining, at the communication network node, whether a user of the communication terminal is available to accept the invitation for the communication session, wherein the determination depends on the characteristic of the use of the first component of the software application; and

wherein the invitation for the communication session is forwarded to the communication terminal when it is determined that the user of communication terminal is available to accept the invitation.

5. The method of claim 1 comprising:

selecting at the communication network node a recipient for the communication session, wherein the selection depends on the characteristic of the use of the software application; and

wherein the invitation is forwarded to the selected recipient.

6. The method of claim 1 wherein the characteristic of the use of the first component of the software application is a Uniform Resource Identifier (URI) to which the software application established a connection.

7. The method of claim 1 wherein the characteristic of the use of the first component of the software application is presence of a keyword.

8. The method of claim 1 wherein the characteristic of the use of the first component of the software application is open for editing by the software application.

9. A method comprising:

receiving, at a communication network node, an invitation for a communication session; and

forwarding the invitation for the communication session from the communication network node to a communication terminal, wherein the forwarding task depends on a measurement of the use of a resource of the communication terminal.

10. The method of claim 9 comprising:

determining, at the communication network node, whether a user of the communication terminal is available to accept the invitation for the communication session, wherein the determination depends on the measurement of the use of the resource of the communication terminal; and

wherein the invitation of the communication session is forwarded to the communication terminal when it is determined that the user of communication terminal is available to accept the invitation.

11. The method of claim 9 comprising:

selecting at the communication network node a recipient for the communication session, wherein the selection depends on the measurement of the use of the communication terminal; and

wherein the invitation is forwarded to the selected recipient.

12. The method of claim 9 wherein the measurement is of memory access frequency.

13. The method of claim 9 wherein the measurement is of processor cache miss rate.

14. The method of claim 9 wherein the measurement is an indication of whether a peripheral device that is connected to the communication terminal.

15. A method comprising:

receiving, at a communication network node, an invitation for a communication session;

forwarding the invitation for the communication session from the communication network node to a communication terminal, wherein the forwarding task depends on a measurement of the use of a resource of a computing device; and

wherein the computing device is associated with the communication terminal.

16. The method of claim 15 comprising:

determining, at the communication network node, whether a user of the communication terminal is available to accept the invitation for the communication session, wherein the determination depends on the measurement of the use of the resource of the computing device; and

wherein the invitation of the communication session is forwarded to the communication terminal when it is determined that the user of communication terminal is available to accept the invitation.

17. The method of claim 15 comprising:

selecting at the communication network node a recipient for the communication session, wherein the selection depends on the measurement of the use of the resource of the computing device; and

wherein the invitation is forwarded to the selected recipient.

18. The method of claim 15 wherein the measurement is of memory access frequency.

19. The method of claim 15 wherein the measurement is of processor cache miss rate.

20. The method of claim 15 wherein the measurement is an indication of whether a peripheral device connected to a peripheral device that is connected to the communication terminal.
