Abstract

A method is provided in which the present invention is for a method in which a telecommunications terminal determines whether its user is available to accept an incoming invitation to participate in a telecommunications session based on: (1) a characteristic of the use of a software application, (2) a characteristic of the use of a resource of a terminal, (3) a sensor input, (4) a characteristic of the incoming invitation or (5) any combination of (1), (2), (3), (4), and (5).

Claims

1. A method comprising:

receiving, at a telecommunications terminal, an invitation to participate in a telecommunications session, wherein;

i. conduct of the telecommunications session requires the telecommunications terminal to utilize a first component of a software application, and

ii. the software application is executing on the telecommunications terminal;

obtaining, at the telecommunications terminal, a first characteristic of use of a second component of the software application; and

transmitting, from the telecommunications terminal, a response to the invitation, wherein the response depends on the first characteristic.

2. The method of claim 1 comprising:

receiving, at the telecommunications terminal, an indication of an availability policy; and

wherein the response to the invitation depends on the availability policy;

3. The method of claim 1 wherein the first characteristic is a Uniform Resource Identifier (URI) to which the first application established a connection.

4. The method of claim 1 wherein the first characteristic is presence of a keyword.

5. The method of claim 1 wherein the first characteristic is access permission for a document that is open for editing by the second software application.

6. The method of claim 1 wherein the response also depends on a characteristic of the invitation to participate in a telecommunications session.

7. The method of claim 1, wherein the response indicates a refusal to accept the invitation, comprising:

receiving a first string at the telecommunications terminal; and

in response to the receipt of the first string, accepting the incoming invitation to participate in a telecommunications session.

8. The method of claim 1, wherein the response to the invitation is a rejection, comprising:

obtaining, at the telecommunications terminal, a second characteristic of the use of the second component of the second software application, wherein the software application is executing on the telecommunications terminal; and

initiating a telecommunications session, from the telecommunications terminal, wherein the telecommunications session is initiated when the second characteristic of the use of a software application component meets a criterion.

9. A method comprising:

receiving, at a telecommunications terminal, an invitation to participate in a telecommunications session, wherein conduct of the telecommunications session requires use of a first software application;

obtaining, at the telecommunications terminal, a first characteristic of use of a component of a second software application, wherein the second software application is executing on the telecommunications terminal, and

transmitting, from the telecommunications terminal, a response to the invitation, wherein the response depends on the first characteristic.

10. The method of claim 9 comprising:

receiving, at the telecommunications terminal, an indication of an availability policy; and

wherein the response to the invitation depends on the availability policy;

11. The method of claim 9 wherein the first characteristic is a Uniform Resource Identifier (URI) to which the second application established a connection.

12. The method of claim 9 wherein the first characteristic is presence of a keyword.

13. The method of claim 9 wherein the first characteristic is access permission for a document that is open for editing by the second software application.

14. The method of claim 9 wherein the response also depends on a characteristic of the invitation to participate in a telecommunications session.

15. The method of claim 9, wherein the response indicates a refusal to accept the invitation, comprising:

receiving a first string at the telecommunications terminal; and

in response to the receipt of the first string, accepting the incoming invitation to participate in a telecommunications session.

16. The method of claim 9, wherein the response to the invitation is a rejection, comprising:

obtaining, at the telecommunications terminal, a second characteristic of the use of the component of the second software application; and

initiating a telecommunications session, from the telecommunications terminal, wherein the telecommunications session is initiated when the second characteristic of the use of a software application component matches a criterion.

17. A method comprising:

receiving, at a telecommunications terminal, an invitation to participate in a telecommunications session, wherein conduct of the telecommunications session requires that a non-empty set of resources of the telecommunications terminal be free;

obtaining, at the telecommunications terminal, a measurement of use of a first resource of the telecommunications terminal, wherein the first resource is not a member of the non-empty set of resources; and

transmitting, from the telecommunications terminal, a response to the invitation, wherein the response depends on the measurement of the use of the first resource.

18. The method of claim 17 wherein the response also depends on a characteristic of the invitation to participate in a telecommunications session.

19. The method of claim 17, wherein the measurement comprises a non-empty set of samples s collected, wherein each sample S_i in the set s constitutes a numerical indicator of the use of the resource at a specific time instant, the method comprising:

calculating, at the telecommunications terminal, a non-empty set of weighted samples w, wherein the value of each member w_i of the set w depends on;

a. the value of a member m of the set s, and

b. the time at which the member m was recorded; and

wherein the response to the invitation depends on the value of a member of the set w.

20. The method of claim 17 wherein the measurement is of keystroke intensity.

21. The method of claim 17 wherein the measurement is of memory access frequency.

22. The method of claim 17 wherein the measurement is of processor cache miss rate.

23. The method of claim 17 wherein the measurement is an indication of whether a peripheral device connected to the telecommunications terminal is used by the telecommunications terminal.

24. The method of claim 17 comprising:

receiving, at the telecommunications terminal, an indication of an availability policy; and

wherein the response to the invitation depends on the availability policy;

25. The method of claim 17, wherein the response indicates a refusal to accept the invitation, comprising:

receiving a first string, at the telecommunications terminal; and

in response to the receipt of the first string, accepting the incoming invitation to participate in a telecommunications session.

26. The method of claim 17, wherein the response to the invitation is a rejection, the method comprising:

initiating a telecommunications session, from the telecommunications terminal, wherein the telecommunications session is initiated when the measurement of the use of the first resource of the telecommunications terminal reaches a threshold value.

27. A method comprising:

receiving, at a telecommunications terminal, an invitation to participate in a telecommunications session;

receiving, at the telecommunications terminal, a first signal from a sensor, wherein the sensor measures an availability indicator;

transmitting, from the telecommunications terminal, a response to the invitation, wherein the response depends on the first signal.

28. The method of claim 27 wherein the sensor is a temperature sensor.

29. The method of claim 27 wherein the sensor is an appliance sensor.

30. The method of claim 27 wherein the sensor is a motion sensor.

31. The method of claim 27 wherein the sensor is a camera.
