Abstract

A dope (24) containing a solvent and a precursor of a solid electrolyte is cast onto a belt (94) to form a casting membrane (61). The casting membrane (61) is immersed in a contact liquid (100) in a liquid bath (83) and peeled as a wet precursor membrane (67) from the belt (94) when having a self-supporting property. The solvent contained in the wet precursor membrane (67) is substituted by the contact liquid (100), and the wet precursor membrane (67) is transported out of the liquid bath (83). After being dried in a tenter device (85), the wet precursor membrane (67) is contacted with a proton solution (110) in a proton substitution chamber (86) to perform proton substitution to the precursor contained in the wet precursor membrane (67), and then dried in a drying chamber (87) to be a solid electrolyte membrane (77).

Claims

1. A method for producing a solid electrolyte membrane comprising the steps of:

forming a casting membrane by casting a dope containing a solid electrolyte and a solvent onto a support;

peeling said casting membrane from said support as a wet membrane;

contacting at least one of said casting membrane and said wet membrane with a contact liquid; and

drying said wet membrane to evaporate said contact liquid from said wet membrane.

A method according to claim 1, wherein said solvent is a mixture of a good solvent compound which is a good solvent of said solid electrolyte and a poor solvent compound which is a poor solvent of said solid electrolyte, and said contact liquid is soluble to said good solvent compound and said poor solvent compound.

A method according to claim 2, further comprising the step of evaporating part of said solvent from said casting membrane before said liquid contacting step, wherein said casting membrane at a time of starting said liquid contacting step contains said good solvent compound and said poor solvent compound.

4. A method according to claim 3, wherein weight ratio of said poor solvent compound to said solid electrolyte in said casting membrane at the time of starting said liquid contacting step is not less than 2% and less than 100%.

5. A method according to claim 2, wherein said contact liquid is either aqueous solution containing a compound having a lower boiling point than said good solvent compound or water.

A method according to claim 3, wherein time for contacting said casting membrane with said contact liquid is determined in accordance with at least one of hardness of said casting membrane and weight of said good solvent compound in said casting membrane both of which change during said liquid contacting step.

A method according to claim 3, wherein said casting membrane forming step, said liquid contacting step, said peeling step and said drying step are performed as a continuous process, when said evaporating step is performed, said casting membrane forming step, said evaporating step, said liquid contacting step, said peeling step and said drying step are performed as a continuous process.

8. A method according to claim 1, wherein said contact liquid contains a poor solvent compound which is a poor solvent of said solid electrolyte.

9. A method according to claim 1, wherein said contact liquid is either aqueous solution containing a good solvent compound which is a good solvent of said solid electrolyte or water.

10. A method according to claim 9, wherein elastic modulus of said wet membrane during said peeling process is not less than 6×

10⁵ Pa.

11. A method according to claim 8, wherein said wet membrane is contacted with a liquid soluble to said solvent.

12. A method according to claim 11, wherein said liquid is either aqueous solution containing said solvent or water.

13. A method according to claim 11, wherein time for contacting said wet membrane with said liquid is not more than 10 minutes.

14. A method according to claim 12, wherein part of said solvent is evaporated from said casting membrane before said liquid contacting step.

15. A method according to claim 1, wherein said solid electrolyte includes a precursor of said solid electrolyte which is a proton acceptor, said wet membrane being contacted with a proton solution which is a proton donor, said wet membrane being washed and dried after the contact with said proton solution.

16. A method according to claim 15, wherein said solvent is a mixture of a good solvent compound which is a good solvent of said solid electrolyte and a poor solvent compound which is a poor solvent of said solid electrolyte, and said contact liquid is purified water.

17. A method according to claim 16, wherein said casting membrane after the contact with said purified water contains less good solvent compound as compared to before the contact.

18. A method according to claim 16, wherein said purified water is contacted with said casting membrane at least by spraying said purified water or by coating said purified water onto said casting membrane.

19. A method according to claim 16, wherein at least one of said casting membrane after the contact with said purified water and said wet membrane is contacted with a liquid which is soluble to both of said good solvent compound and said poor solvent compound.

20. A method according to claim 19, wherein said liquid is either a mixture of water and said good solvent compound or a mixture of water and said poor solvent compound.

21. A method according to claim 20, wherein a sum of time for contacting said casting membrane with said purified water and time for contacting at least one of said casting membrane and said wet membrane with said liquid is not more than 10 minutes.

22. A method according to claim 15, further comprising the steps of:

a proton substitution step for contacting one surface of said wet membrane including said precursor with said proton solution having proton concentration of not less than 0.05 mol/liter; and

a washing and drying step for washing and drying said wet membrane after the contact with said proton solution.

23. A method according to claim 22, wherein the other surface of said wet membrane is contacted with a low-concentration proton solution having the proton concentration lower than said proton solution by not less than 0.05 mol/liter.

24. A method according to claim 22, wherein formula weight of anion contained in said proton solution is not less than 40 and not more than 1000.

25. A method according to claim 23, wherein said low-concentration proton solution is a liquid containing anion having formula weight of not less than 40 and not more than 1000 or water.

26. A method according to claim 22, wherein temperature of said wet membrane at a time of the contact with said proton solution or said low-concentration proton solution is not less than 30°

C. and not more than glass-transition temperature of said precursor.

27. A method according to claim 22, wherein temperature of at least one of said proton solution and said low-concentration proton solution is not less than 30°

C. and not more than glass-transition temperature of said precursor.

28. A method according to claim 22, wherein said proton substitution step and said washing and drying step are performed successively.

29. A method according to claim 1, wherein said good solvent compound contains dimethylsulfoxide, and said poor solvent compound contains alcohol having one to five carbons.

30. A method according to claim 1, wherein said solid electrolyte is a hydrocarbon polymer.

31. A method according to claim 30, wherein said hydrocarbon polymer is an aromatic polymer having a sulfonic acid group.

32. A method according to claim 31, wherein said aromatic polymer is a copolymer formed of structural units represented by general formulae (I), (II) and (III) shown in chemical formula 1.

37. A solid electrolyte membrane produced by a method described in claim 1.

38. A membrane electrode assembly comprising:

a solid electrolyte membrane according to claim 37;

an anode electrode being adhered to one side of said solid electrolyte membrane for generating protons from a hydrogen-containing substance supplied from outside; and

a cathode electrode being adhered to the other side of said solid electrolyte membrane for synthesizing water from said protons passed through said solid electrolyte membrane and a gas supplied from said outside.

39. A fuel cell comprising:

a membrane electrode assembly according to claim 38; and

current collectors attached to said electrodes of said membrane electrode assembly for transmitting electrons between said anode electrode and outside and between said cathode electrode and said outside.

33. An apparatus for producing a solid electrolyte membrane comprising:

a casting device for casting a dope containing a solid electrolyte and a solvent onto a support to form a casting membrane;

a peeling device for peeling said casting membrane from said support as a wet membrane;

a contact liquid contacting device for contacting at least one of said casting membrane and said wet membrane with a contact liquid, said contact liquid containing a liquid soluble to said solvent or a liquid which is a poor solvent of said solid electrolyte; and

a drying device for drying said wet membrane.

34. An apparatus according to claim 33, further comprising:

a proton solution contacting device for contacting one surface of said wet membrane including a polymer which is a precursor of said solid electrolyte with a proton solution containing acid which is a proton donor;

a washing device for washing said wet membrane after the contact with said proton solution; and

an after-wash drying device for drying said wet membrane after the washing.

35. An apparatus according to claim 34, further comprising a temperature control device for controlling temperature of said proton solution or temperature of said one surface of said wet membrane.

36. An apparatus according to claim 35, wherein said proton solution contacting device includes a low-concentration proton solution contacting device for contacting the other surface of said wet membrane with a low-concentration proton solution having proton concentration lower than said proton solution, and said temperature control device includes another temperature control device for controlling temperature of said low-concentration proton solution or temperature of said the other surface of said wet membrane.
