Abstract

Apparatuses for remote surveillance and the applications therefor are described here. In one aspect, embodiments of the present disclosure include an apparatus for remote surveillance. The apparatus includes a capturing unit, a location-sensor, a processing unit coupled to the capturing unit, a storage unit coupled to the processing unit, the capturing unit, and the location-sensor. the capturing unit captures a recording of surrounding environment and events occurring therein for storage in the storage unit and the location-sensor identifies location data for storage in the storage unit. One embodiment of the apparatus further includes a network component, a controller coupled to the storage unit, and/or a motion detector coupled to the controller. Upon detection of a triggering event, the controller enables the recording to be streamed in real time via a network connection established by the network component.

Claims

1. An apparatus for remote surveillance, comprising:

a capturing unit;

a location-sensor;

a processing unit coupled to the capturing unit;

a storage unit coupled to the processing unit, the capturing unit, and the location-sensor;

wherein, when in operation, the capturing unit captures a recording of surrounding environment and events occurring therein for storage in the storage unit;

wherein, the location-sensor identifies location data for storage in the storage unit;

a network component;

a controller coupled to the storage unit;

a motion detector coupled to the controller, the motion detector detects a triggering event;

wherein, upon detection of the triggering event, the controller enables the recording to be streamed in real time via a network connection established by the network component.

2. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein, the network connection is, one or more of, an Internet connection and cellular connection.

3. The apparatus of claim 2, wherein SMS messages are received when the cellular connection is established.

4. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein, the capturing unit comprises at least one camera sensor.

5. The apparatus of claim 4, wherein a frame rate of the at least one sensor is between 0.2-35 frames/second.

6. The apparatus of claim 5, wherein the frame rate at which images are captured by the at least one camera sensor is automatically adjusted based on lighting conditions or manually configured.

7. The apparatus of claim 5, further comprising, another camera sensor operating at a lower frame rate than the frame rate of the at least one sensor.

8. The apparatus of claim 4, wherein, the capturing unit includes one camera sensor that captures a field of view of 60-80 degrees and a pitch of the field of view is 50-65 degrees.

9. The apparatus of claim 4, wherein, each of the at least one camera sensors are configured to capture adjacent fields-of-views that are substantially non-overlapping in space.

10. The apparatus of claim 4,

wherein, the capturing unit includes three camera sensors and an angle of the field-of-view captured by each camera is 60-80 degrees;

wherein, a cumulative field of view of the three cameras is 180-240 degrees.

11. The apparatus of claim 10, wherein, a pitch of the field-of-view of the capturing unit is 15-25 degrees.

12. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein, the capturing unit includes a microphone.

13. The apparatus of claim 1, further comprising, an audio codec.

14. The apparatus of claim 13, wherein, the audio codec compresses recorded audio as an MP3 file.

15. The apparatus of claim 13, wherein, the audio codec decompresses audio for playback.

16. The apparatus of claim 14, wherein, recorded audio is transmitted via VoIP.

17. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein, the recording is compressed to a lower resolution to be streamed wirelessly in real time to a remote computer over the network connection.

18. The apparatus of claim 17, wherein, the recording is stored at a higher resolution in the storage unit and transferred wirelessly as a file to the remote computer.

19. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein, the controller enables video capture that occurs subsequent to the detection of the triggering event to be recorded at a higher resolution than before the detection of the triggering event.

20. The apparatus of claim 19, wherein, another copy of the higher resolution recording is created and stored in the storage unit in compressed form.

21. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein, the motion detector includes a G-force sensor.

22. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein, the motion detector includes a three-axis accelerometer.

23. The apparatus of claim 1, further comprising, a temperature sensor.

24. The apparatus of claim 23, wherein, the temperature sensor is an infrared sensor.

25. The apparatus of claim 24, wherein the triggering event includes human activity detected by the infrared sensor.

26. The apparatus of claim 1, further comprising, a USB port.

27. The apparatus of claim 26, wherein the USB port is used for, one or more of, powering the apparatus, streaming audio or video, and file transfer.

28. The apparatus of claim 1, further comprising, an RJ11 port.

29. The apparatus of claim 28, further comprising, a vehicle power port adapter suitable for connection to the RJ11 port.

30. The apparatus of claim 1, further comprising, a flash memory reader and wherein the storage unit is a flash memory card.

31. The apparatus of claim 1, further comprising, a panic button.

32. The apparatus of claim 1, further comprising, a speaker.

33. The apparatus of claim 1, further comprising, a display unit.

34. The apparatus of claim 33, wherein the display unit is an LED or OLED display.

35. The apparatus of claim 33, wherein, the display unit displays touch-screen sensitive menu buttons.

36. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein, the location-sensor performs GPS satellite tracking.

37. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein, the location sensor performs cell-tower GPS tracking.

38. The apparatus of claim 1, further comprising, a mounting slot for mounting on a mobile unit.

39. An method for remote monitoring, the method, comprising:

continuously capturing a first video recording of surrounding environment and events occurring therein at a first resolution;

storing the video recording in a storage unit at the first resolution;

in response to detecting an occurrence of a triggering event, capturing the second video recording of the surrounding environment and events occurring after the triggering event at a second resolution that is higher than the first resolution;

storing the second video recording in the storage unit at the second resolution;

creating a copy of the second video recording and storing the copy of the second video recording;

generating a compressed version of the second video by compressing the copy of the second video to a lower resolution;

streaming the compressed version of the second video over a network.

40. The method of claim 39, wherein, the compression ratio of the compressed version of the second video is 75-90%.

41. The method of claim 39, wherein the compressed version of the second video is transmitted over a cellular network one frame at a time.

42. The method of claim 39, further comprising, send the second video recording at the second resolution as a file over the network.

43. The method of claim 39, wherein the triggering event is activation of a panic button.

44. The method of claim 39, wherein the triggering event is human activity.

45. The method of claim 39, wherein the detecting the occurrence of the triggering event includes detecting a human that is falling or climbing.

46. An apparatus for remote surveillance, comprising:

at least one camera sensor that captures video recordings;

a microphone that captures audio recordings;

a processing unit coupled to the at least one camera sensor and the microphone;

a display unit coupled to the processing unit;

a flash reader coupled to the processing unit, the flash reader suitable for to read a flash card;

wherein, when in operation, the at least one camera sensor and microphone each capture video and audio recordings of the surrounding environment and events occurring therein for storage in the flash card;

a controller coupled to the flash reader;

a motion detector coupled to the controller, the motion detector detects a triggering event;

wherein, upon detection of the triggering event, the controller enables the recording to be compared and stored at a higher resolution and compressed to a lower resolution for streaming in real time over a network connection.

47. The apparatus of claim 46, wherein, the audio recording is streamed over VoIP.

48. The apparatus of claim 46, further comprising, an audio codec to compress the audio recordings to an MP3 format.

49. The apparatus of claim 46, wherein, the network connection is a cellular network.

50. The apparatus of claim 46, wherein, the motion detector is a G-force sensor.
