Abstract

A new system is described that integrates real time item location data from electronically tagged items with a video system to allow cameras in proximity to a tagged item to automatically be enabled or recorded and to move and follow the movement of the tagged item. The methodology to implement such a system is described and involves computerized coordinate system scaling and conversion to automatically select and command movement if available of the most appropriate cameras. The system can follow a moving tagged item and hand off the item from one camera to another, and also command other facility assets, such as lights and door locks.

Claims

1. Employing an object tracking system using RF, IR, visible light (but not the camera image), GPS, acoustic or other x/y location technology as a real time location system (RTLS) to select one or more suitable cameras that contain the tracked object within their field of view or direct one or more movable or zoomable cameras to a suitable positioning to place the object within the field of view. Converting the coordinate systems of the object tracking system or cameras or both to enable a comparison of tag location with camera fields of view or available movable camera fields of view in real time to enable cameras that can see the object to be selected.

2. In claim 1 integrating data from the tag system into the video security management system to enable the security system to react to tag movement and position and select appropriate cameras, command movable cameras to observe or track tagged objects, turn on lights, activate locks, and take other appropriate actions available to the security and facility systems.

3. In claim 1 converting video camera field of view coordinates, PTZ coordinates, and tag system coordinates in a computing device to enable matching and selecting cameras that can view the tagged object.

4. In claim 1 calculating proper scale factors and coordinate offsets to coordinate and align cameras with the tag map.

5. In claim 1 provide a smoothing method to give gradual movement commands to the cameras to facilitate smooth viewing of the tagged object.

6. In claim 1 using settable priority rules to identify and select the best camera or cameras to use to observe or track a tagged item.

7. In claim 1 keeping a record of the possible field of view, movement coordinate system, wide angle field of view, long range telephoto zoom capability, and other capabilities of the available cameras in a memory device so that the system can determine which cameras have the capability to observe the object'"'"'s reported location and make appropriate camera selections.

8. In claim 1 providing a means to enter and store a set of definable rules controlling camera selection, prioritizing and selecting more than one camera if more than one has good view of the location, and if a selected camera is movable or zoomable defining control actions such as but not limited to occasional reposition, movement speed, degree of zoom, etc.

9. In claim 1 employing an object tracking system in or adjacent to a camera assembly and at the camera control or signal receiving location. Adding the tracking signals into the camera signal or into the same camera system wiring or communication channels or if the system is network based, providing both the video and the tracking system over the same communication connection with either the same or two separate network addresses.

10. A real time locating system providing coordinates that can be used to automatically select an appropriate camera or cameras or provide tracking commands to one or more cameras to provide an image of a tagged item to a monitor.

11. In claim 10 integrating data from the tag system into the video security management system to enable the security system to react to tag movement and position and select appropriate cameras, command movable cameras to observe or track tagged objects, turn on lights, activate locks, and take other appropriate actions available to the security and facility systems.

12. In claim 10 converting video camera field of view coordinates, PTZ coordinates, and tag system coordinates in a computing device to enable matching and selecting cameras that can view the tagged object.
