PERSONALIZATION USING A HAND-PRESSURE SIGNATURE
First Claim
1. A method for identifying a user based on how the user grips a device with at least one of their hands, comprising:
- receiving output signals from selective pressure sensors on a pressure-sensitive body of a device, the body having a plurality of pressure sensors distributed over the pressure-sensitive body, each pressure sensor is operative to provide an output signal proportional to a pressure applied by the user'"'"'s hands to the pressure-sensitive body at the area at which the pressure sensor is located;
comparing the output signals received from the selective pressure sensors against stored pressure profile signatures; and
determining the identity of the user based on a favorable comparison of the received output signals with a stored pressure profile signature associated with the user.

Abstract
A hand-held device having a body with a pressure-sensitive exterior surface. At least a portion of the pressure-sensitive exterior surface is designed to be grasped by a user'"'"'s hand. The pressure-sensitive surface contains a plurality of pressure sensors operative to provide an output signal proportional to a pressure applied by the user'"'"'s hands to the exterior surface of the hand-held device at the area the pressure sensor is located. The device also includes a memory for storing the output signals provided by the plurality of pressure sensors and a processor for comparing the output signals provided by the plurality of pressure sensors against stored pressure profile signatures for positively identifying the user.

17. A method for identifying a user, comprising:
-
storing multiple pressure profile signatures associated with multiple users, each pressure profile signature associated with a user is based on a position of the user'"'"'s hands grasping a device and the amount of pressure being applied to the device by the user'"'"'s hands; determining that a user is grasping the device; receiving a first set of output signals from selective pressure sensors responsive to the pressure applied by the user'"'"'s hands on the pressure-sensitive body of the device, the first set of output signals representing a first pressure profile; comparing the first pressure profile against the stored pressure profile signatures; determining the identity of the user holding the device based on a favorable comparison of the first pressure profile with a stored pressure profile signature; receiving a second set of output signals from selective pressure sensors responsive to the pressure applied by the user'"'"'s hands on the pressure-sensitive body of the device, the second set of output signals representing a second pressure profile; comparing the second pressure profile against the first pressure profile; detecting a change in the pressure profile; and adjusting the functionality of the device based on detecting a change in the pressure profile. - View Dependent Claims (18, 19, 20)
