Abstract

Various devices and methods are provided with respect to inserting multiple surgical instruments through a single surgical access device. A medical device including a flexible tissue retractor and a releasable insert having multiple instrument openings is disclosed. The insert can be in the form of an insert assembly including multiple components. A member operable to prevent over insertion of the insert with respect to a passageway of a retractor is provided.

Claims

1. A medical device comprising:

a tissue retractor comprising a flexible member having an outer surface for engaging a body incision and an inner surface defining a passageway;

an insert releasably supported with respect to the passageway defined by the flexible member, wherein the insert comprises at least one instrument opening; and

a member operable to prevent over insertion of the insert within the passageway.

2. The medical device of claim 1 wherein the member is disposed distally of the insert within the passageway.

3. The medical device of claim 1 wherein the member is disposed on the tissue retractor.

4. The medical device of claim 1 wherein the member is disposed on a component insertable within the tissue retractor.

5. The medical device of claim 1 further comprising a sleeve releasably insertable within the tissue retractor, wherein the insert is received within the sleeve, and wherein the member is disposed on the sleeve.

6. The medical device of claim 1 wherein the member comprises an annular rib.
