Abstract

The invention is a hospital scheduling system that allows for real-time updates of the status of a medical procedure to be transmitted. More particularly, this transmission allows for the consistent flow of a pre-arranged sequence of events a hospital may use for patient treatment procedures. Once an event has transpired, notice of the event occurrence may be transmitted to interested personnel through specific transmission, or a general broadcast for all personnel such that updates may be checked by any interested hospital personnel. The devices capable of receiving the transmissions may be a wired device, or may be a portable wireless device, such as a hand-held unit. Moreover, the invention describes a pedal that may be capable of programming such that when specific areas of the pedal are compressed, coding will be sent to a computer for translation into status messages that may be transmitted through a network to any number of recipients. The pedal may be adapted such that compressions may be performed by the user'"'"'s foot.

Claims

1. A method of communicating “

real-time”

status information of an on-going medical procedure, comprising;

performing the on-going medical procedure; and

transmitting, by way of a computer network, the “

real time”

status information of an on-going medical procedure.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein a medical procedure further comprises:

patient arrival;

set-up and preparation of the medical procedure site;

patient preparation;

surgical team preparation;

patient treatment;

patient observation; and

clean up time.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein said on-going medical procedure is any medical routine comprised of a series of events that must be performed in a particular sequence.

4. The method of claim 3, wherein monitoring of the previously performed events would increase efficiency of the medical routine.

5. The method of claim 1, wherein a medical procedure may comprise:

excisions;

resections;

ligations;

grafts;

transplants;

athrodeses;

general surgery;

otolaryngology;

orthopaedic surgery;

neurosurgery;

ophthalmology;

podiatric surgery;

or

urology.

6. The method of claim 1, wherein transmission may be sent or received by:

admitting personnel;

operating room pre-operative personnel;

laboratory personnel;

radiology personnel;

central supply personnel;

medical supervisors;

hospital maintenance workers;

a floor manager;

anesthesiologists;

anesthesia technicians;

surgeons;

surgical assistants/nurses;

scrub nurses;

surgical technicians;

circulating nurses;

or

intensive care unit personnel.

7. The method of claim 1, wherein transmission, by way of a computer network may be done by wiring or wirelessly.

8. The method of claim 1, further comprising a device capable of receiving communicated information.

9. The device of claim 5 wherein said receiving device may be wired or wireless.

10. A method of communicating “

real-time”

status information of an on-going medical procedure, comprising;

performing the on-going medical procedure;

transmitting, by way of a computer network, the “

real time”

status information of an on-going medical procedure;

receiving communicated information; and

acknowledging receipt of said communicated information.

11. A medical computer network, comprising:

a transmitting device situated within a medical facility where an on-going medical procedure is being performed;

which transmits real-time status information of the on-going medical procedure; and

a receiving device adapted to accept and display communicated status information.

12. A medical communications system comprising:

a device adapted to send codes for respective stages of medical procedure performance;

a computer adapted to translate said codes into real-time status information;

a network interface that transmits and distributes said real-time status information.

13. The medical communications system of claim 12, wherein the device comprises a pedal.

14. The device of claim 13, wherein said pedal includes buttons related to said codes such that respective stages of procedure performance are transmitted with respect to the button pressed.

15. The device of claim 13, wherein the pedal is programmable.

16. The device of claim 13, wherein the pedal is operable by foot depression.

17. The medical communications system of claim 12, further comprising a device capable of receiving communicated information.

18. The medical communications system of claim 17, wherein the device may be wired or wireless.

19. The medical communications system of claim 12, wherein the device may detect pre-defined conditions in the medical procedure through automated means.

20. The device of claim 19, further comprising a magnetic sensor.
