Abstract

Systems and methods for assessing a patient'"'"'s risk of poor outcome in real-time are provided. The real-time risk may be used by a physician to guide decision making during a procedure.

Claims

1. A system for monitoring a patient comprising:

an input for receiving input data;

a sensor capable of collecting physiological data from a patient;

a processor capable of using at least a portion of the collected input and the patient data to;

define a plurality of patient states;

derive a risk associated with each of the plurality of patient states;

classify the patient as being in one of the plurality of patient states;

calculate a real-time risk assessment of the patient; and

a display operative to display in real-time said real-time risk assessment including the patient state.

2. The system of claim 1, wherein the input data comprises at least one of the patient'"'"'s medical history, demographic information and a population database.

3. The system of claim 2, wherein the physiological data comprises real-time physiological parameters of the patient.

4. The system of claim 3, wherein the real-time physiological parameters are selected from the group consisting of heart rate, respiratory rate, blood pressure, derived hemodynamic parameters, Bispectral Index (BIS), SpO2, temperature and ScO2.

5. The system of claim 4, wherein the real-time risk assessment is calculated from a combination of the patient'"'"'s medical history and real-time physiological parameters.

6. The system of claim 4, wherein the monitor is further adapted to use at least a portion of said input data to calculate a reference set.

7. The system of claim 1, wherein the risk is associated with an endpoint.

8. The system of claim 1, wherein the system further comprises an alarm capable of notifying a physician when the patient is in an undesirable patient state.

9. The system of claim 1, wherein the display displays information in a 3-dimensional format.

10. The system of claim 1, wherein the display displays information in a 2-dimensional format.

11. A method for monitoring a patient comprising:

receiving input data;

collecting, using a sensor, physiological data from a patient;

combining at least a portion of said input data with at least a portion of the physiological data;

calculating, using a processor, a real-time risk assessment based at least in part on the combination of data to classify the patient as being in one of a plurality of patient states, wherein each of the patient states is associated with a risk parameter; and

displaying the real-time risk assessment; and

providing alerts based on the real-time risk assessment.

12. The method of claim 11 further comprising:

calculating a reference set from the input data;

defining a plurality of patient states from the reference set;

providing an endpoint;

calculating risks parameters associated with the endpoint for each of the plurality of patient states; and

continuously calculating a patient state based at least in part on the combination of data, wherein the real-time risk assessment and the alerts are based at least in part on the calculated patient state and the calculated risks.

13. The method in claim 12 wherein risks are calculated based at least in part on a Cox Regression model.

14. The method of claim 11, wherein the input data comprises at least one of the patient'"'"'s medical history, demographic information and a population database.

15. The method of claim 14, wherein the physiological data comprises real-time physiological parameters of the patient.

16. The method of claim 15, wherein the real-time physiological parameters are selected from the group consisting of heart rate, respiratory rate, blood pressure, derived hemodynamic parameters, Bispectral Index (BIS), SpO2, temperature and ScO2.

17. The method of claim 16, wherein the real-time risk assessment is calculated from a combination of the patient'"'"'s medical history and real-time physiological parameters.

18. The method of claim 12, wherein the alert is provided when the patient is in an undesirable patient state.

19. The method of claim 18, wherein the alert is provided each time a patient is in an undesirable patient state for a time duration exceeding a threshold duration.

20. The method of claim 11, wherein the real-time risk assessment is displayed in a 3-dimensional format.

21. The method of claim 11, wherein the real-time risk assessment is displayed in a 2-dimensional format.

22. The method of claim 12, wherein the plurality of patient states are defined based at least in part on Bispectral Index (BIS), mean arterial pressure (MAP), and mean alveolar concentration (MAC).

23. The method of claim 22, wherein the plurality of patient states are defined based at least in part on SpO2, temperature and ScO2.

24. The method of claim 12, wherein the plurality of patient states are defined based at least in part on at least two or more of Bispectral Index (BIS), mean arterial pressure (MAP), mean alveolar concentration (MAC), MAP/Heart Rate (HR), SpO2 and ScO2.
