1. In a multiple-ratio automatic transmission for an automotive vehicle powertrain, the automatic transmission including a controller, a housing, an input torque source, a torque output member, gearing defining multiple torque flow paths from the input torque source to the torque output member and first and second pressure actuated torque establishing elements for establishing, respectively, a gear configuration with a low speed ratio and a gear configuration with a higher speed ratio during a ratio upshift event having a preparatory phase, a torque phase and an inertia phase, a load sensor assembly for measuring an amount of torque transmitted through the torque establishing element comprising:

  • a core mounted on the transmission housing; and

a load sensor mounted on the core and positioned against a portion of the torque establishing element whereby a portion of the amount of torque transmitted through the torque establishing element travels through the load sensor and is measured by the load sensor assembly, wherein a signal representative of the amount of torque transmitted through the torque establishing element is sent to the controller from the load sensor.
