Abstract

In accordance with one aspect, a thermally regulating construction material comprises a base material and a polymeric phase change material bound to the base material, wherein the base material provides reversible temperature regulation properties to the building construction material. In accordance with another aspect, an insulation material for use in building construction comprises a base material and a polymeric phase change material bound to the base material, wherein the base material provides reversible temperature regulation properties to the insulation material. The base material may be selected from the group consisting of foam insulation, loose fill insulation, and batted insulation.

Claims

1. A thermally regulating construction material, comprising:

a base material; and

a polymeric phase change material bound to the base material;

wherein the base material provides reversible temperature regulation properties to the building construction material.

2. A thermally regulating construction material according to claim 1, wherein the polymeric phase change material is chemically bound to the substrate.

3. A thermally regulating construction material according to claim 2, wherein the chemical bonding is at least one of covalent bonding or electrovalent bonding.

4. A thermally regulating construction material according to claim 2, wherein the bonding is accomplished through direct bonding.

5. A thermally regulating construction material according to claim 2, wherein the bonding is accomplished by a connecting compound.

A thermally regulating construction material according to claim 1 further comprising at least one ingredient selected from a group consisting of a functional polymeric phase change material, an additional phase change material, encapsulated phase change materials, a binder, a formulation, an additive, crosslinkers, blending polymers, compatibilizers, wetting agents, and combinations of the foregoing.

7. A thermally regulating construction material according to claim 1, wherein the base material is selected from the group consisting of insulation, wood, metal sheeting, glass, siding, particle board, flashing, or combinations of the foregoing.

A thermally regulating construction material according to claim 1, wherein the polymeric phase change material is a functionally reactive polymeric phase change material selected from the group consisting of an acid anhydride group, an alkenyl group, an alkynyl group, an alkyl group, an aldehyde group, an amide group, an amino group and their salts, a N-substituted amino group, an aziridine, an aryl group, a carbonyl group, a carboxy group and their salts, an epoxy group, an ester group, an ether group, a glycidyl group, a halo group, a hydride group, a hydroxy group, an isocyanate group, a thiol group, a disulfide group, a silyl or silane group, an urea group, and an urethane group, and wherein the substrate comprises at least one of cellulose, metal, wood, plastic, and glass.

9. A thermally regulating construction material according to claim 2, wherein the polymeric phase change material comprises an anhydride function.

10. A thermally regulating construction material according to claim 2, wherein the polymeric phase change material comprises an isocyanate function.

11. A thermally regulating construction material according to 2, wherein the polymeric phase change material comprises a reactive function selected from a group consisting of an amine function and an amide function.

12. A thermally regulating construction material according to claim 2, wherein the polymeric phase change material comprises a silane function.

13. A thermally regulating construction material according to claim 2, wherein the polymeric phase change material comprises a double bond.

14. A thermally regulating construction material according to claim 1, characterized in having at least one phase change temperature in the range between −

10°

C. and 100°

C.

15. A thermally regulating construction material according to claim 1, characterized in having phase change enthalpy of at least 2.0 Joules per gram.

16. A thermally regulating construction material according to claim 1, wherein the phase change material comprises a hydrophilic crystallizable section.

17. A thermally regulating building construction material according to claim 1, wherein the phase change material comprises a hydrophobic crystallizable section.

18. A structure, comprising:

a thermally regulating construction material, the construction material comprising;

a base material; and

a polymeric phase change material bound to the base material;

wherein the base material provides reversible temperature regulation properties to the structure.

19. The structure of claim 18, wherein the construction material is selected from the group consisting of insulation, wood, metal sheeting, glass, siding, particle board, flashing.

20. The structure of claim 18, wherein the construction material further comprises an additive selected from the group consisting of an anti-microbial, an anti-fungal, a U/V blocker, and a moisture management material.

21. An insulation material for use in building construction, comprising:

a base material,

a polymeric phase change material bound to the base material,

wherein the base material provides reversible temperature regulation properties to the insulation material.

22. The insulation material for use in building construction of claim 21, wherein the base material is selected from the group consisting of foam insulation, loose fill insulation, and batted insulation.

23. The insulation material for use in building construction of claim 21, wherein the polymeric phase change material is a functional polymeric phase change material having a latent heat of at least 20 Joules/gram and comprising

a backbone chain,

a plurality of side chains, and

at least one crystallizable section,

wherein the plurality of side chains form the at least one crystallizable section and

wherein the functional polymeric material carries at least one reactive function on at least one of the side chains.

24. The insulation material for use in building construction of claim 23, wherein the reactive function is capable of forming at least a first covalent or electrovalent bond.
