1. A communication device for multiple input multiple output wireless communication, the communication device comprises:
- a baseband processing module operable to;
determine protocols of other wireless communication devices within a proximal region;
determine whether the protocols of the other wireless communication devices within the proximal region are of a like protocol;
determine number of transmit antennas;
when the protocols of the wireless communication devices within the proximal region are of the like protocol, format a preamble of a frame of the wireless communication utilizing at least one of cyclic shifting of symbols, cyclic shifting of tones, sparse tone allocation, and sparse symbol allocation based on the number of transmit antennas; and
a plurality of transmitter sections operable to transmit the preamble of the frame via one or more of the transmit antennas.

The method continues by determining the number of transmit antennas. The method continues, when the protocols of the wireless communication devices within the proximal region are of the like protocol, formatting a preamble of a frame of the wireless communication utilizing at least one of cyclic shifting of symbols, cyclic shifting of tones, sparse tone allocation, and sparse symbol allocation based on the number of transmit antennas.
