Abstract

A method of upgrading software components within a dispersed data storage network is disclosed. A list of identifiers corresponding to devices within the dispersed data storage network is assembled. Each member of the list is assigned to an upgrade set based on the devices that are reachable by the vaults associated with the device.

Claims

1. A method of building a set of devices to upgrade, said devices operating on a network, said network including one or more devices of a first type and one or more devices of a second type, said one or more devices of a first type and one or more devices of a second type being related by a plurality of tying software structures, said method comprising the steps of:

i) selecting a tying structure;

ii) determining all devices of a first type and all devices of a second type related to said tying structure; and

iii) adding said devices of a first type related to said tying structure to an upgrade set; and

iv) adding said devices of a second type related to said tying structure to said upgrade set.

2. The method of claim 1 wherein said one or more devices of a first type are slice servers, said one or more devices of a second type are grid access computers, and said tying structure is a vault.

3. A system for upgrading software components operating on a network comprising:

i) one or more devices of a first type;

ii) one or more devices of a second type;

iii) an upgrade manager adapted to access a plurality of tying software structures, each of said tying software structures relating one or more of said devices of a first type to one or more devices of a second type;

iv) said upgrade manager building at least one upgrade set using said tying structures, said upgrade set comprising one or more identifiers of a first type corresponding to all devices of a first type included in said upgrade set and one or more identifiers of a second type corresponding to all devices of a second type included in said upgrade set;

v) said upgrade manager providing upgraded software components to all devices of first type included in said upgrade set; and

vi) said upgrade manager providing upgraded software components to all devices of a second type included in said upgrade set.

4. The system of claim 3 wherein said devices of a first type are slice servers, said devices of a second type are grid access computers, and said tying structure is a vault.

5. An upgrade manager comprising:

i) a network port adapted to communicate over a network;

ii) a storage device for storing an upgrade for software components operating on devices of a first type and an upgrade for software components operating on devices of a second type;

iii) said storage device storing a plurality of identifiers corresponding to one or more devices of a first type coupled to said network;

iv) said storage device storing a second plurality of identifiers corresponding to one or more devices of a second type coupled to said network;

v) said storage device further storing one or more tying software structures, said tying software structures relating one or more devices of a first type to one or more devices of a second type;

vi) a processor coupled to said network port and to said storage device, said processor building an upgrade set including all device identifiers of a first type and all device identifiers of a second type related to one of said tying structures;

vii) said processor providing said upgrade for software components operating on devices of a first type to one or more devices corresponding to said device identifiers of a first type included in said upgrade set; and

viii)said processor providing said upgrade for software components operating on devices of a second type to one or more devices corresponding to said device identifiers of a second type included in said upgrade set.

6. The upgrade manager of claim 5 wherein said device identifiers of a first type correspond to slice servers, said device identifiers of a second type correspond to grid access computers, and said tying structure is a vault.
