Abstract

A flat panel display having a black mask EMI layer isolated from Vcom and tied to zero potential. The flat panel display has an integral metal heater layer and thermal sensor that are in close proximity to the liquid crystals to provide efficient heating and temperature sensing.

Claims

1. A flat panel LCD display, having a front and a rear LCD plate, comprising:

a layer of liquid crystal interposed between said front and rear LCD plates;

a TFT array interposed between said rear LCD plate and said layer of liquid crystal;

at least one thermal sensor; and

an EMI layer applied directly to a surface of said front LCD plate opposite said liquid crystal.

2. The flat panel LCD display according to claim 1, wherein said EMI layer is an ITO layer.

3. The flat panel LCD display according to claim 1, wherein said EMI layer is a less than or equal to about 15-20 ohms/sq.

4. The flat panel LCD display according to claim 1, wherein said each thermal sensor is embedded into said TFT array.

7. The flat panel LCD display according to claim 1, wherein said each thermal sensor is a diode array.

8. The flat panel LCD panel display according to claim 7, wherein said diode array is a series/parallel array.

9. The flat panel LCD display according to claim 1, wherein said each thermal array provides a nominal 2.5V to 5.0 V changes in bias potential as the liquid crystal temperature changes from −

60 degrees Celsius to 100 degrees Celsius.

10. The flat panel LCD panel display according to claim 1, wherein said TFT array comprises source and gate drive TCP connections.

11. The flat panel LCD display according to claim 10, wherein said each thermal sensor is located between and in electrical communication with each said source TCP connection.

12. A flat panel display, having a front and a rear plate, comprising:

a layer of liquid crystal interposed between said front and rear plates;

a TFT array interposed between said rear plate and said layer of liquid crystal, said TFT array including source and gate drive TCP connections;

at least one thermal sensor embedded into said TFT array; and

an EMI layer applied directly to a surface of said front plate opposite said liquid crystal.

13. The flat panel LCD display according to claim 12, wherein said EMI layer is an ITO layer.

14. The flat panel LCD display according to claim 12, wherein said EMI layer is a less than or equal to about 15-20 ohms/sq.

15. The flat panel LCD display according to claim 12, wherein said each thermal sensor is a diode array.

16. The flat panel LCD panel display according to claim 15, wherein said diode array is a series/parallel array.

17. A flat panel display comprising:

a front and rear plate;

a layer of liquid crystal interposed between said front and rear plate;

a TFT array interposed between said front and rear plates;

at least one thermal sensor embedded into said TFT array; and

a transparent EMI layer applied directly to a surface of said front plate opposite said liquid crystal.

18. The flat panel display according to claim 17, wherein said each thermal sensor is a series/parallel diode array.

19. The flat panel display according to claim 17, further comprising source and gate drive TCP connections in electrical communication with said TFT array.

20. The flat panel display according to claim 19, wherein said at least one thermal sensor is located between and in electrical communication with each said source TCP connection.
