Abstract

Implantable infusion devices configured to improve fill and evacuation procedures.

Claims

25. An implantable infusion device, comprising:

an infusion device housing;

first and second reservoir compartments associated with the infusion device housing;

at least one fluid transfer device operably connected to the first and second reservoir compartments;

first and second fill ports respectively operably connected to the first and second reservoir compartments; and

first and second needle detectors respectively associated with the first and second fill ports.

26. An implantable infusion device as claimed in claim 25, wherein the first and second fill ports are carried by the infusion device housing.

27. An implantable infusion device as claimed in claim 25, wherein the first and second fill ports share a common housing that is located in spaced relation to the infusion device housing.

28. An implantable infusion device as claimed in claim 25, wherein the at least one fluid transfer device comprises a first fluid transfer device operably connected to the first reservoir compartment and a second fluid transfer device operably connected to the second reservoir compartment.

29. An implantable infusion device as claimed in claim 28, further comprising:

a first delivery lumen operably connected to the first fluid transfer device; and

a second delivery lumen operably connected to the second fluid transfer device.

30. An implantable infusion device as claimed in claim 29, wherein the first and second delivery lumens are located within a single catheter.

31. An implantable infusion device as claimed in claim 25, further comprising:

a reservoir and a pressure transmissive partition located within the reservoir, the first and second reservoir compartments being located within the reservoir on opposite sides of the pressure transmissive partition.

32. A method, comprising the steps of:

communicating with an implanted infusion device that includes first and second reservoir compartments, at least one fluid transfer device operably connected to the first and second reservoir compartments, first and second fill ports respectively operably connected to the first and second reservoir compartments, and first and second needle detectors respectively associated with the first and second fill ports;

instructing the implanted infusion device to actuate the first and second needle detectors;

receiving needle detection data; and

in response to a needle being detected by one of the first and second needle detectors, providing an indication as to which fill port the needle is located in.

33. A method as claimed in claim 32, wherein the step of providing an indication comprises displaying fill port and/or reservoir information associated with the fill port that the needle is located in.

34. A method as claimed in claim 33, wherein the information includes infusible substance information.

35. A method as claimed in claim 32, further comprising the step of:

presenting an indication of the amount of time that the needle detectors will remain actuated.

36. An implantable infusion device, comprising:

an infusion device housing;

first and second reservoir compartments associated with the infusion device housing;

at least one fluid transfer device operably connected to the first and second reservoir compartments;

first and second fill ports associated with the infusion device housing and respectively operably connected to the first and second reservoir compartments; and

wherein the infusion device housing includes a first palpable landmark adjacent to the first fill port.

37. An implantable infusion device as claimed in claim 36, wherein the infusion device housing includes a second palpable landmark adjacent to the second fill port.

38. An implantable infusion device as claimed in claim 37, wherein the first and second palpable landmarks face in different directions.

39. An implantable infusion device as claimed in claim 36, wherein

the infusion device housing defines a generally curved perimeter;

and

the first palpable landmark comprises a discontinuity in the generally curved perimeter.

40. An implantable infusion device as claimed in claim 39, wherein the discontinuity comprises an indentation in the generally curved perimeter.

41. An implantable infusion device as claimed in claim 36, further comprising:

first and second needle detectors respectively associated with the first and second fill ports.

42. An implantable infusion device as claimed in claim 36, wherein the at least one fluid transfer device comprises a first fluid transfer device operably connected to the first reservoir compartment and a second fluid transfer device operably connected to the second reservoir compartment.

43. An implantable infusion device as claimed in claim 42, further comprising:

a first delivery lumen operably connected to the first fluid transfer device; and

a second delivery lumen operably connected to the second fluid transfer device.

44. An implantable infusion device as claimed in claim 43, wherein the first and second delivery lumens are located within a single catheter.

45. An implantable infusion device as claimed in claim 36, further comprising:

a reservoir and a pressure transmissive partition located within the reservoir, the first and second reservoir compartments being located within the reservoir on opposite sides of the pressure transmissive partition.

62. An implantable infusion device, comprising:

an infusion device housing;

first and second reservoir compartments associated with the infusion device housing;

at least one fluid transfer device operably connected to the first and second reservoir compartments;

a first fill port, associated with the housing and defining a first needle access angle, operably connected to the first reservoir compartment; and

a second fill port, associated with the housing and defining a second needle access angle that is different that the first needle access angle, operably connected to the second reservoir compartment.

63. An implantable infusion device as claimed in claim 62, wherein the infusion device housing includes a convex wall defining an apex and the first and second fill ports are located on opposite sides of the apex.

64. An implantable infusion device as claimed in claim 62, wherein the infusion device housing includes a cover having a surface, and the first needle access angle is about 90 degrees measured from a horizontal plane defined by or associated with the cover surface.

65. An implantable infusion device as claimed in claim 62, wherein the infusion device housing defines an outer perimeter, a port support extends radially outwardly from the outer perimeter, and the second fill port is carried by the port support.

66. An implantable infusion device as claimed in claim 62, wherein the at least one fluid transfer device comprises a first fluid transfer device operably connected to the first reservoir compartment and a second fluid transfer device operably connected to the second reservoir compartment.

67. An implantable infusion device as claimed in claim 66, further comprising:

a first delivery lumen operably connected to the first fluid transfer device; and

a second delivery lumen operably connected to the second fluid transfer device.

68. An implantable infusion device as claimed in claim 67, wherein the first and second delivery lumens are located within different catheters.

69. An implantable infusion device as claimed in claim 62, further comprising:

a reservoir and a pressure transmissive partition located within the reservoir, the first and second reservoir compartments being located within the reservoir on opposite sides of the pressure transmissive partition.
