Abstract

A flushing solution is described which is suitable for use in surgical, in particular ophthalmological, operations and which contains a non-Newtonian fluid. The use of such a flushing solution is also described.

Claims

1. Non-Newtonian fluid for use as a flushing solution for surgical operations.

2. Flushing solution according to claim 1 for vitreous body and retinal surgery.

3. Flushing solution according to claim 1, comprising at least one fluid selected from silicone oil, polyhydric alcohols having from 2 to 4 carbon atoms, polyethylene oxide- and/or polypropylene oxide-containing fluids or mixtures thereof.

4. Flushing solution according to claim 3, comprising at least one silicone oil having a density of less than 1 g/cm³ and having a viscosity of from 0.1 to 100 mPas.

5. Flushing solution according to claim 3, characterised in that the density of the silicone oil is from 0.80 to 0.98 g/cm³.

6. Flushing solution according to claim 1, characterised in that it has a viscosity in the range from 0.5 to 50 mPas.

7. Flushing solution according to claim 1, characterised in that the viscosity is in the range from 2 to 10 mPas.

8. Flushing solution according to claim 3, characterised in that the silicone oil is a straight-chained siloxane.

9. Flushing solution according claim 3, characterised in that the silicone oil is a substituted or unsubstituted polydimethylsiloxane.

10. Flushing solution according to claim 3, characterised in that the silicone oil is formed from siloxanes having from 2 to 10 siloxane units.

11. Flushing solution according to claim 3, characterised in that the silicone oil is phenyl-substituted.

12. Flushing solution according to claim 3, characterised in that a semi-fluorinated alkane is additionally present.

13. Flushing solution according to claim 12, characterised in that the silicone oil and the semi-fluorinated alkane are present in a ratio such that the density of the solution is less than 1 g/cm³.

14. Flushing solution according to claim 12, characterised in that the silicone oil and the semi-fluorinated alkane are present in a ratio of from 50:

15. Flushing solution according to claim 1, characterised in that one or more active ingredients are additionally present.

16. Flushing solution according to claim 15, characterised in that one or more water-insoluble active ingredients are present.

17. Flushing solution according to claim 1, characterised in that one or more medicaments, antioxidants and/or nutrients are present.

20. A method of flushing a vitreous body or retina during surgery comprising flushing the vitreous body or retina with the flushing solution of claim 3.

21. A method of flushing the eye during operations in the posterior region of the eye comprising flushing the posterior region of the eye with the flushing solution of claim 1.
