Abstract

Telemetry data from an IMD are routinely extracted in order to perform a full prognosis of a patient'"'"'s condition and to alter the IMD therapy programming if necessary. Typically, while the IMD is inside of the patient, it periodically or continuously collects and stores data into its memory. These stored data can then be extracted by a physician to an external device for further analysis. In addition to the stored telemetry data, the physician may also want to collect real-time telemetry data such as real-time IEGM data or other physiological data while the patient is in the physician'"'"'s office. However, transmitting telemetry data can consume a high level of power and shorten the battery life of the IMD if not properly managed. Thus, it is advantageous to have built-in features to minimize the possibility the IMD is not transmitting and/or receiving data while it is not being monitored and/or used by the physician for a predetermined amount of time.

Claims

1. A method for power management comprising the steps of:

receiving telemetry data transmitted from an implantable medical device to an external device;

determining a time lapse since receiving an input from a user at the external device while receiving the telemetry data; and

sending an instruction from the external device to the implantable medical device to terminate the transmission of telemetry data to the external device when the time lapse exceeds a predetermined amount time.

2. The method as recited in claim 1 wherein after the step of sending, transmission of selected telemetry data is terminated, and a telemetry connection between the implantable medical device and the external device remains in place.

3. The method as recited in claim 1 wherein after the step of sending, a telemetry connection between the implantable medical device and the external device is suspended.

The method as recited in claim 1 further comprising the steps of sending an instruction from the external device to the implantable medical device to re-start the transmission of telemetry data to the external device when an input from the user is detected after the predetermined amount of time has passed

5. The method as recited in claim 1 wherein the user input is received at a user interface of the external device.

6. The method as recited in claim 1 wherein the instruction comprises an instruction to power down a transmitter in the implantable medical device used for transmitting the telemetry data.

7. The method as recited in claim 1 wherein the predetermined amount of time is between about 2 to 8 minutes.

8. The method as recited in claim 1 further comprising the step of soliciting for a user response to determine whether the user wants to continue receiving telemetry data at the external device.

9. The method as recited in claim 8 wherein the method of soliciting is performed using a user interface that is connected with the external device.

10. The method as recited in claim 9 wherein the method of soliciting is performed at periodic intervals.

11. The method as recited in claim 1 wherein after transmission of the telemetry data from the implantable medical device has been terminated, the further step of the implantable medical device seeking for a signal to initiate transmission.

12. The method as recited in claim 11 wherein the step of seeking is performed at an interval of time that varies depending on the time since transmission termination.

13. The method as recited in claim 12 wherein the interval of time increases in duration if no signal to initiate transmission is sensed.

14. The method of claim 1, further comprising the step of sending an instruction from the external device to the implantable medical device to terminate the telemetry data transmission to the external device based on an input from the user.

15. A system for managing the battery life of an implantable medical device comprising:

a transceiver configured to receive telemetry data transmitted from the implantable medical device to an external device;

a timer to determine a time lapse since receiving an input from a user at the external device while receiving the telemetry data; and

a controller configured to send an instruction from the external device to the implantable medical device to terminate transmission of the telemetry data to the external device when the time lapse exceeds a predetermined amount time.

16. The system as recited in claim 15 wherein after receiving the instruction the implantable medical device terminates transmission of selected telemetry data, and a telemetry connection between the implantable medical device and the external device remains in place.

17. The system as recited in claim 15 wherein after receiving the instruction the implantable medical device terminates transmission of all telemetry data, and a telemetry connection between the implantable medical device and the external device is suspended.

The system as recited in claim 15 wherein the controller is further configured to send an instruction from the external device to the implantable medical device to re-start transmission of telemetry data to the external device when an input from the user is detected after the predetermined amount of time has passed.

19. The system of recited in claim 15 wherein the instruction comprises an instruction to power down a transmitter in the implantable medical device used for transmitting telemetry data.

20. The system as recited in claim 15 wherein the controller is further configured to periodically solicit for a user response to determine whether the user wants to receive telemetry data at the external device.
