Abstract

A system for detecting tissue in a patient is disclosed. The system includes an introducer assembly, a surgical instrument and a sensor element. In one configuration, the introducer assembly has a first delivery lumen and a secondary lumen. The surgical instrument is configured for resecting tissue from a patient, and is received within the first delivery lumen. The sensor element is configured to detect at least one property of the tissue of said patient. The sensor being positioned within the secondary lumen so as to contact tissue.

Claims

1. A system for detecting tissue in a patient comprising:

an introducer assembly having a first delivery lumen and a secondary lumen;

a surgical instrument configured for resecting tissue from a patient, wherein the surgical instrument is received within the first delivery lumen; and

a sensor element configured to detect at least one property of the tissue of said patient, the sensor being positioned within the secondary lumen so as to contact tissue.

The system of claim 1, wherein the surgical instrument is a tissue resection device comprises an outer cannula and an inner cutting cannula, wherein the outer cannula further includes a tissue receiving opening therein and the inner cutting cannula is moveable with respect to the tissue cutting cannula.

3. The system of claim 1, further comprising a processor electrically communicating with the sensor, the processor analyzing data from the sensor.

4. The system of claim 1, further comprising an indicator.

5. The system of claim 4, wherein the indicator indicates to a user an abnormality of the tissue of the patient.

6. The system of claim 4, wherein the indicator indicates to a user a normality of the tissue of the patient.

7. The system of claim 4, wherein the indicator is audible.

8. The system of claim 4, wherein the indicator is visual.

9. The system of claim 1, wherein the secondary lumen has a cross-section diameter that is smaller than a cross-sectional diameter of the first delivery lumen.

10. The system of claim 1, wherein the secondary lumen is fixedly secured to the first delivery lumen.

11. The system of claim 1, wherein the first delivery lumen is defined by a distal end, and the secondary lumen is defined by a distal end, wherein the distal end of the secondary lumen is positioned distally of the distal end of the first delivery lumen.

12. The system of claim 1, wherein the first delivery lumen and the secondary lumen are arranged to be co-planar.

13. The system of claim 1, wherein the surgical device is selectively rotatable, independent of the sensor element.

14. The system of claim 1, wherein the first delivery lumen is defined by a distal end, and the secondary lumen is defined by a distal end, wherein the distal end of the secondary lumen is positioned proximally of the distal end of the first delivery lumen.

15. A system for detecting a characteristic of tissue in a patient comprising:

an introducer cannula defining at least one lumen and having a proximal opening and a distal opening;

a sensor element configured to detect abnormal tissue of the patient, the sensor element positioned adjacent the distal opening of the introducer cannula, external to the lumen; and

a tissue resection device configured for insertion through the introducer cannula, the tissue resection device configured to resect tissue from the patient and convey the resected tissue away from the patient.

16. The system of claim 15, wherein the sensor is position on an outside surface of the introducer cannula.

17. The system of claim 15, wherein the tissue resection device is selectively rotatable, independent of the sensor element.

18. The system of claim 15, further comprising a processor electrically communicating with the sensor, said processor analyzing data from the sensor.

19. The system of claim 15, further comprising an indicator related to a determination of abnormality of the tissue.

20. The system of claim 15, wherein the tissue resection device includes an inner cutting cannula and an outer cannula, the tissue cutting opening being formed in the outer cannula and the inner cutting cannula being positioned within the outer cannula, the inner cutting cannula further being selectively moveable across the tissue cutting opening to sever tissue.
