Abstract

A method of defining a media editing application for creating media presentations. The method provides a composite display area for displaying a set of clip shapes that represent media clips. It also provides a consolidated editing tool for (1) identifying clip-shape edit points that are near a cursor'"'"'s location as the cursor moves from track to track in the composite display area and (2) collectively selecting the identified clip-shape edit points along multiple track in order to receive an edit operation to collectively perform on said the clip-shapes of the identified edit points.

Claims

1. A method of defining a media editing application for creating media presentations, the method comprising:

providing a composite display area for displaying a set of clip shapes that represent media clips;

providing a consolidated editing tool for;

identifying clip-shape edit points that are near a cursor'"'"'s location as the cursor moves from track to track in the composite display area; and

collectively selecting the identified clip-shape edit points along multiple track in order to receive an edit operation to collectively perform on said the clip-shapes of the identified edit points.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein identifying clip-shape edit points comprises:

detecting, in the composite display area, a location of a cursor with respect to a particular clip;

associating the detected location with an edit point of the particular clip.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein identifying clip-shape edit points comprises:

detecting that a cursor has traversed back to a first track with a first clip shape after having previously traversed near the first clip shape on the first track to a second clip shape on a second track and after edit-points for the first and second clip shapes have been selected;

removing the selected edit point for the second clip shape after said detecting.

4. The method of claim 3, wherein identifying clip-shape edit points further comprises:

removing the edit point that was selected for the first clip shape in the previous traversal of the cursor near the first clip shape.

5. The method of claim 4, wherein identifying clip-shape edit points further comprises identifying a new edit point for the first clip shape.

6. The method of claim 4, wherein identifying clip-shape edit points further comprises identifying an edit point for a third clip shape on the first track, said edit point for the third clip shape near the location of the cursor when the cursor traverses back to the first track from the second track.

7. A computer readable medium storing a media editing application for creating media presentations, the computer readable medium comprising sets of instructions for:

displaying a composite display area with a plurality of clip shapes that represent a plurality of media clips;

identifying clip-shape edit points that are near a cursor'"'"'s location as the cursor moves from track to track in the composite display area; and

collectively selecting the identified clip-shape edit points along multiple track in order to receive an edit operation to collectively perform on said the clip-shapes of the identified edit points.

8. The computer readable medium of claim 7, wherein the set of instructions for identifying clip-shape edit points comprises sets of instructions for:

detecting, in the composite display area, a location of a cursor with respect to a particular clip;

associating the detected location with an edit point of the particular clip.

9. The computer readable medium of claim 7, wherein the set of instructions for identifying clip-shape edit points comprises sets of instructions for:

detecting that a cursor has traversed back to a first track with a first clip shape after having previously traversed near the first clip shape on the first track to a second clip shape on a second track and after edit-points for the first and second clip shapes have been selected;

removing the selected edit point for the second clip shape after said detecting.

10. The computer readable medium of claim 9, wherein the set of instructions for identifying clip-shape edit points further comprises a set of instructions for removing the edit point that was selected for the first clip shape in the previous traversal of the cursor near the first clip shape.

11. The computer readable medium of claim 10, wherein the set of instructions for identifying clip-shape edit points further comprises a set of instructions for identifying a new edit point for the first clip shape.

The computer readable medium of claim 10, wherein the set of instructions for identifying clip-shape edit points further comprises a set of instructions for identifying an edit point for a third clip shape on the first track, said edit point for the third clip shape near the location of the cursor when the cursor traverses back to the first track from the second track.

13. The computer readable medium of claim 7, the computer program further comprises a set of instructions for specifying an edit operation for each selected edit point.

14. The computer readable medium of claim 7, the computer program further comprises a set of instructions for specifying the same edit operation for each selected edit point.

15. The computer readable medium of claim 14, wherein the set of instructions for specifying the same edit operation for each selected edit point comprises sets of instructions for

identifying a particular edit operation based on the location of the cursor with respect to a first-selected clip shape;

assigning the particular edit operation to each subsequently selected edit point.

16. A method of defining a media editing application for creating media presentations, the method comprising:

providing a composite display area for displaying a set of clip shapes that represent media clips;

providing an editing operation indicator that is displayed at an edit point of a clip shape when a particular editing operation is selected; and

providing one or more auxiliary editing operation indicators that are displayed for each media track above and below the one or more editing operation indicators when the particular editing operation is a ripple trim editing operation.

17. The method of claim 16, wherein one or more track de-selection indicators appear with each auxiliary editing operation indicators.

18. The method of claim 17, wherein the one or more track de-selection indicators, when clicked, causes an associated track to be excluded from the ripple trim editing operation.

19. A method of defining a media editing application for creating media presentations, the method comprising:

a) providing a composite display area for displaying a set of clip shapes that represent media clips;

b) providing one or more edit limit indicators that are displayed during an edit operation to indicate one or more edit boundaries for the edit operation.

20. The method of claim 19, wherein the one or more edit limit indicators correspond to one or more terminal points of a media source associated with one or more clip shapes displayed in the composite display area.

21. The method of claim 19, wherein the one or more edit limit indicators are displayed when a particular editing operation of a plurality of editing operations is performed.

22. The method of claim 19, wherein the particular editing operation is a ripple trim editing operation.

23. The method of claim 22, wherein an edit limit indicator is displayed to indicate an edit boundary that corresponds to an ending point of a media source associated with a particular media clip shape.

24. The method of claim 19,

wherein the particular editing operation is a roll trim editing operation,

wherein an edit limit indicator is displayed to indicate a left edit boundary that corresponds to a starting point of a media source associated with a right-side clip shape of two adjacent clip shapes,

wherein an edit limit indicator is displayed to indicate a right edit boundary that corresponds to an ending point of a media source associated with a left-side clip shape of two adjacent clip shapes.

25. The method of claim 19,

wherein the particular editing operation is a slip trim editing operation that is performed on a particular clip shape,

wherein an edit limit indicator is displayed to indicate a left edit boundary that corresponds to a starting point of a media source associated with the particular clip shape,

wherein an edit limit indicator is displayed to indicate a right edit boundary that corresponds to an ending point of a media source associated with the particular clip shape.

26. The method of claim 19,

wherein the particular editing operation is a slide trim editing operation that is performed on a particular clip shape,

wherein an edit limit indicator is displayed to indicate a left edit boundary that corresponds to an ending point of a media source associated with a clip shape that is left of the particular clip shape,

wherein an edit limit indicator is displayed to indicate a right edit boundary that corresponds to a starting point of a media source associated with a clip shape that is right of the particular clip shape.
