Abstract

A computer readable medium (CRM) storing a media editing application providing a consolidated editing tool is described. The application includes a graphical user interface (GUI). The GUI has a display area for displaying a composite presentation that the application creates by compositing a plurality of media clips, a composite display area for displaying graphical representations of a set of media clips that are part of the composite presentation, and a consolidated editing tool that provides several user-selectable editing operations within the composite display area. In some embodiments, the consolidated editing tool automatically presents an associated editing operation for selection and activation based on the cursor location within the composite display area.

Claims

1. A method of defining a media editing application for creating media presentations, the method comprising:

providing a composite display area for displaying a set of clip shapes that represent media clips;

providing a consolidated editing tool for presenting a plurality of editing operations near a cursor location within said composite display without requiring the cursor to exit the composite display area to activate the presentation of the operations.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein the consolidated editing tool automatically presents the editing operations sequentially based on the cursor'"'"'s location in the composite display area.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein the consolidated editing tool presents multiple editing operations simultaneously near the cursor'"'"'s location.

4. The method of claim 1, wherein the plurality of editing operations include a plurality of trim operations.

5. The method of claim 1, wherein the plurality of editing operations is presented in a user interface item as a selectable user interface item.

6. The method of claim 1, wherein the plurality of editing operations is presented in a user interface item that is scrollable.

7. A method of defining a media editing application for creating media presentations, the method comprising:

a) providing a composite display area for displaying a set of clip shapes that represent media clips;

b) providing a consolidated editing tool for;

detecting, in the composite display area, a location of a cursor with respect to a particular clip;

identifying, for a plurality of editing operations, a particular editing operation that is associated with the detected location of the cursor with respect to the particular clip; and

presenting the particular editing operation for selection and activation near the position of the cursor in the composite display area.

8. The method of claim 7, wherein identifying the particular editing operation comprises:

identifying, from a plurality of zones defined with respect to the clip shapes, a zone in which the cursor is located and

identifying the particular editing operation associated with the identified zone.

9. The method of claim 8, wherein each zone is defined with respect to a particular region of at least one clip shape.

10. The method of claim 8, wherein each clip shape is divided into one or more zones.

11. The method of claim 9, wherein when a particular clip shape is smaller than a threshold size, the particular clip shape is divided into one or more fewer zones than the plurality of zones.

12. The method of claim 9, wherein when a particular clip shape is smaller than a threshold size, the particular clip shape has one zone.

13. The method of claim 7, wherein the plurality of editing operations comprise a plurality of trimming operations.

14. The method of claim 13, wherein the trimming operations comprise ripple, roll, slip, and slide trim operations.

15. The method of claim 13 further comprising providing keystroke override functionality to direct the consolidated editing tool to choose a first editing operation over a second editing operation that is associated with a detected location of a particular clip.

16. The method of claim 7 further comprising:

providing a user interface item for activating the consolidated editing tool'"'"'s detection and identification operations without requiring the cursor to leave the composite display area.

17. The method of claim 7 further comprising providing different editing operation indicators for the different editing operations, wherein when a particular editing operation is selected, the selected operation'"'"'s corresponding editing operation indicator is displayed at an edit point of the particular clip shape.

18. A computer readable medium storing a media editing program for execution by at least one processor, said media editing program for creating media presentations, the computer readable medium comprising sets of instructions for:

displaying, in a composite display area, a set of clip shapes that represent media clips;

detecting, in the composite display area, a location of a cursor with respect to a particular clip;

identifying, for a plurality of editing operations, a particular editing operation that is associated with the detected location of the cursor with respect to the particular clip; and

presenting the particular editing operation for selection and activation near the position of the cursor in the composite display area.

19. The computer readable medium of claim 18, wherein the set of instructions for identifying the particular editing operation comprises sets of instructions for:

identifying, from a plurality of zones defined with respect to the clip shapes, a zone in which the cursor is located and

identifying the particular editing operation associated with the identified zone.

20. The computer readable medium of claim 19, wherein each zone is defined with respect to a particular region of at least one clip shape.

21. The computer readable medium of claim 18, wherein the plurality of editing operations comprise a plurality of trimming operations.

22. The computer readable medium of claim 21, wherein the computer program further comprises a set of instructions for providing keystroke override functionality to select a first editing operation over a second editing operation that is associated with a detected location of a particular clip.

23. The computer readable medium of claim 18, wherein the computer program further comprises sets of instructions for providing a user interface item for activating the detection and identification operations without requiring the cursor to leave the composite display area.

The computer readable medium of claim 18, wherein the computer program further comprises a set of instructions for displaying different editing operation indicators for the different editing operations, wherein when a particular editing operation is selected, the selected operation'"'"'s corresponding editing operation indicator is displayed at an edit point of the particular clip shape.

25. A computer readable medium (CRM) storing a media editing application for creating media presentations, said application comprising a graphical user interface (GUI), said GUI comprising:

a) a composite display area for displaying a set of clip shapes that represent media clips, each particular clip having a set of associated zones that identifies a set of regions within the particular clip, each particular zone associated with a particular editing operation;

b) a consolidated editing tool for (i) identifying a zone of a particular clip in which the cursor is located and (ii) from a plurality of editing operations, presenting one editing operation that is associated with the identified zone for the particular clip.

26. The computer readable medium of claim 25, wherein at least two clip shapes with different sizes have different number of zones.

27. The computer readable medium of claim 25, wherein the GUI further comprises a keystroke override functionality to select a first editing operation over a second editing operation that is associated with a detected zone of a particular clip.

28. The computer readable medium of claim 25, wherein the GUI further comprises a user interface item for activating the detection and identification operations without requiring the cursor to leave the composite display area.

29. The computer readable medium of claim 25, wherein the GUI further comprises different editing operation indicators for the different editing operations, wherein when a particular editing operation is selected, the selected operation'"'"'s corresponding editing operation indicator is displayed at an edit point of the particular clip shape.
