Abstract

A computer readable medium storing a media editing application for creating media presentations is described. The application includes a graphical user interface (GUI). The GUI has (1) a presentation display area for displaying a composite presentation that the application creates by compositing several media clips, (2) a composite display area for displaying a set of graphical representations that represent a set of committed media clips that are committed to be a part of the composite presentation, (3) several selectable location markers that are associated with several locations in the composite display area, and (4) an audition display area associated with each location marker for receiving and displaying one or more candidate media clips for adding to the composite presentation at the location of the associated location marker.

Claims

1. A computer readable medium storing a media editing application for creating media presentations, said application comprising a graphical user interface (GUI), said GUI comprising:

a) a presentation display area for displaying a composite presentation that the application creates by compositing a plurality of media clips;

b) a composite display area for displaying a set of graphical representations that represents a set of committed media clips that is committed to be a part of the composite presentation; and

c) a plurality of selectable location markers that are associated with a plurality of locations in the composite display area,

d) for each location marker, an associated audition display area for receiving and displaying one or more candidate media clips for adding to the composite presentation at the location of the associated location marker.

2. The computer readable medium of claim 1, wherein each audition display area is associated with a different location marker.

3. The computer readable medium of claim 1, wherein each audition display area is associated with a plurality of location markers.

4. The computer readable medium of claim 3, wherein a single audition display area is associated with all of the selectable location markers.

5. The computer readable medium of claim 3, wherein the audition display area comprises a plurality of sections, wherein each section is associated with a different location marker.

6. The computer readable medium of claim 5, wherein the composite display area spans a timeline and different sections are different durations along the timeline.

7. The computer readable medium of claim 1, wherein the composite display area spans a timeline and different locations of the location markers correspond to different instances in time in the composite presentation.

8. The computer readable medium of claim 1, wherein the location markers are placed at locations within the composite display area.

9. A method of providing a media-editing application for creating multimedia presentations, the method comprising:

providing a composite display area for displaying a set of graphical representations that represent a set of committed media clips that are committed to be a part of a composite presentation that the application creates by compositing a plurality of media clips;

providing a plurality of selectable location markers that are associated with a plurality of locations in the composite display area; and

providing, for each location marker, an associated audition display area for receiving and displaying one or more candidate media clips for adding to the composite presentation at the location of the associated location marker.

10. The method of claim 9, wherein the selection of a particular location marker causes the audition display area associated with the particular location marker to be opened.

11. The method of claim 10, wherein the audition display area opens in order to i) display the candidate media clips that are for adding to the composite presentation at the location of the associated location marker and ii) receive additional candidate media clips.

12. The method of claim 11, wherein a candidate clip is added to the audition display area using a cursor drag operation.

13. The method of claim 11, wherein a candidate media clip is removed from the audition display area and added to a location in the composite display area using a cursor drag operation.

14. The method of claim 11, wherein a candidate media clip is added to the audition display area using at least one of a cursor operation and a set of keystrokes.

15. The method of claim 11, wherein a committed clip is removed from the composite display area and added to a location in the audition display area using a cursor drag operation.

16. The method of claim 11, wherein a committed media clip is removed from the composite display area and added to a location in the audition display area using at least one of a cursor operation and a set of keystrokes.

17. A computer readable medium storing a media editing application for execution by at least one processor, the media editing application comprising sets of instructions for:

displaying a plurality of graphical representations of media clips along a timeline for a composite media presentation in a composite display area of the media-editing application;

receiving user input to display an audition display area that is arranged next to the composite display area; and

displaying the audition display area for receiving and displaying candidate media clips for adding to the composite presentation, said audition display area including a plurality of locations for holding candidate media clips for placing at nearby locations in the composite display area.

18. The computer readable medium of claim 17, wherein only one audition display area is used for the entire composite display area.

19. The computer readable medium of claim 17, wherein more than one audition display area is use for the composite display area.

The computer readable medium of claim 19, wherein the media editing application includes a plurality of location markers associated with the composite display area, wherein each audition display area is associated with a location marker, wherein the set of instructions for receiving user input to display an audition display area comprises a set of instructions for receiving a user'"'"'s selection of a location marker associated with the audition display area.

21. The computer readable medium of claim 17, wherein each location marker comprises a representative image of a media clip in the associated location in the composite display area.

22. The computer readable medium of claim 21, wherein the representative image is a thumbnail image.
