Abstract

Exemplary embodiments provide a coating composition for an outermost layer of a fuser member that can include a plurality of fluorinated diamond-containing particles dispersed in a fluororesin matrix.

Claims

1. A coating composition comprising:

a fluororesin polymer; and

a plurality of fluorinated diamond-containing particles mixed with the fluororesin polymer, wherein each particle of the plurality of fluorinated diamond-containing particles comprises a chemically active shell layer over a diamond core, the chemically active shell layer comprising a fluorine.

2. The composition of claim 1, further comprising an aqueous solution containing the fluororesin polymer and the plurality of fluorinated diamond-containing particles.

3. The composition of claim 1, wherein the chemically active shell layer of the plurality of fluorinated diamond-containing particles further comprises a functional group comprising a quarternized amine, a carboxylated amine or combinations thereof.

4. The composition of claim 1, wherein the chemically active shell layer comprises a sp² carbon black and the diamond core comprises a sp³ diamond.

5. The composition of claim 1, wherein the diamond core comprises a natural diamond, a synthetic diamond or combinations thereof.

6. The composition of claim 1, wherein the plurality of fluorinated diamond-containing particles have an average particle size of from about 1 nm to about 1000 nm.

7. The composition of claim 1, wherein the plurality of fluorinated diamond-containing particles comprises a fluorine content ranging from about 1 percent to about 40 percent by weight of the total particles.

The composition of claim 1, wherein the plurality of fluorinated diamond-containing particles comprises nanospheres, nanotubes, nanofibers, nanoshafts, nanopillars, nanowires, nanorods, nanoneedles, nanofibers, spheres, whiskers, rods, filaments, caged structures, buckyballs, or mixtures thereof.

The composition of claim 1, wherein the fluororesin polymer comprises a polymer selected from the group consisting of polytetrafluoroethylene, copolymer of tetrfluoroethylene and hexafluoropropylene, copolymer of tetrafluoroethylene and perfluoro(propyl vinyl ether), copolymer of tetrafluoroethylene and perfluoro(ethyl vinyl ether), copolymer of tetrafluoroethylene and perfluoro(methyl vinyl ether) and combinations thereof.

10. A fuser member comprising:

a substrate; and

an outermost layer disposed over the substrate, wherein the outermost layer comprises a plurality of fluorinated nano diamond-containing particles dispersed in a fluoroplastic matrix and wherein each particle of the plurality of fluorinated nano diamond-containing particles comprises a chemically active shell layer that is fluorinated over a chemically inert diamond core.

11. The member of claim 10, wherein the substrate is a belt, a plate, a film, a sheet, or a drelt.

12. The member of claim 10, wherein the substrate is formed of a material selected from the group consisting of a metal, a plastic, and a ceramic,

wherein the metal comprises a material selected from the group consisting of an aluminum, an anodized aluminum, a steel, a nickel, a copper, and mixtures thereof, and

wherein the plastic comprises a material selected from the group consisting of a polyimide, a polyester, a polyetheretherketone (PEEK), a poly(arylene ether), a polyamide, and mixtures thereof.

13. The member of claim 10, wherein the chemically active shell layer comprises a sp² carbon black and a functional group comprising a quarternized amine, a carboxylated amine or combinations thereof.

14. The member of claim 10, wherein the plurality of fluorinated diamond-containing particles are present in the outermost layer in an amount of from about 1 percent to about 50 percent by weight.

The member of claim 10, wherein the fluoroplastic matrix comprises a material selected from the group consisting of polytetrafluoroethylene, copolymer of tetrfluoroethylene and hexafluoropropylene, copolymer of tetrafluoroethylene and perfluoro(propyl vinyl ether), copolymer of tetrafluoroethylene and perfluoro(ethyl vinyl ether), copolymer of tetrafluoroethylene and perfluoro(methyl vinyl ether) and combinations thereof.

16. The member of claim 10, wherein the surface of the outermost layer has a water contact angle of from about 110 degrees to about 150 degrees.

17. The member of claim 10, wherein the outermost layer has a surface resistivity ranging from about 10⁵ ohm/sq to about 10¹⁵ ohm/sq.

18. The member of claim 10, wherein the outermost layer has a hardness of from about 1H to about 4H measured by a pencil hardness test.

19. A method for making a fuser member comprising:

providing a belt substrate;

forming a coating composition comprising a fluororesin polymer and a plurality of fluorinated diamond-containing particles in an aqueous solution, wherein each particle of the plurality of fluorinated diamond-containing particles comprises a chemically active shell layer over a diamond core, and wherein the chemically active shell layer comprises a fluorine; and

applying the coating composition to the belt substrate to form an outermost layer of the fuser member.

20. The method of claim 19, further comprising disposing one or more functional layers between the belt substrate and the outermost layer.
