230. A system for monitoring a subject, comprising:

a microphone; a speaker; a speech recognition system; a speech synthesizer; a quality of responsiveness determiner; and a processor configured to; initiate computer generated verbal interaction with the subject, including selecting speech for the speech synthesizer to synthesize and cause to be generated by the speaker, wherein the verbal interaction with the subject is selected to elicit a verbal response from the subject; receive digitized sound representing verbal responses from the subject and captured by the microphone; cause the speech recognition system to perform speech recognition on the digitized sound; cause the quality of responsiveness determiner to determine a quality of responsiveness of the subject to the synthesized speech; and determine whether to contact a predetermined contact for the subject after the quality of the responsiveness is determined. - View Dependent Claims (231, 232, 234, 236, 237, 238)

253. A personal emergency monitoring system, comprising:
-
a) a speaker that outputs audio signal, including computer generated speech, to a subject b) a microphone that receives sounds, including speech of the subject, including speech related to responses to questions and statements, and speech related to keywords and keyword phrases initiated by the subject, and converts the sounds into an input audio signal; and c) a control unit, comprising; i) a computer ii) an audio interface that receives the input audio signal from the microphone and sends the output audio signal to the speaker; iii) a speech synthesis module that reviews speech-related text, including questions and statements, and converts the text into an output audio signal, and sends the signal to the audio interface; vi) a speech recognition module that receives the input audio signal from the audio interface, and converts the input audio signal into corresponding speech-related text, including responses, keywords and phrases and indicates if the input audio signal contains speech that is unrecognizable; v) a data storage area for storing data, including data associated with said responses from the subject and keywords and phrases; vi) a quality of responsiveness interpreter that determines a quality of responsiveness associated with every received processed response or anticipated response, from the subject, said quality of responsiveness comprising a valid response or poor quality of responsiveness; vii) a verbal input handling module that is configured to; receive said responses, keywords and phrases from the speech recognition module process each received response and received keyword and phrase receive the quality of responsiveness associated with every received processed response or anticipated response, from the quality of responsiveness interpreter, and pass the quality of responsiveness and the processed response, if it is a valid response, to an input processing module viii) an interaction session definition store that contains one or more interaction session definitions, each interaction session definition defining a unique verbal interaction between the system and the subject and comprising; statements and questions to be spoken to the subject, possible valid responses, if any, associated with each statement and question data, if any, to be saved in the data storage area, for each possible valid response a next action to be carried out, including a next statement or question to be spoken, for each possible valid response and every type of possible quality of responsiveness ix) the input processing module, which is configured to execute the interaction session definitions, execution carried out upon receiving an instruction to execute a particular interaction session definition, execution of an interaction session definition comprising; outputting a statement or question, comprising speech-related text, to the speech synthesis module receiving a valid processed response, if any, and quality of responsiveness saving data, if any, associated with the valid processed response in the data storage area determining the next action to be carried out, and carrying the next action out repeating the steps of outputting, receiving, storing data and determining until execution of the interaction session definition is complete x) an emergency condition table that contains one or more emergency situation logic expressions, each emergency situation logic expression representing a possible emergency situation that may be experienced by the subject; and xi) an emergency analysis module that evaluates each of the emergency situation logic expressions repeatedly and on an on-going basis, upon evaluating a true said emergency situation logic expression, determining that the subject is experiencing a possible emergency situation, and initiating emergency alerting action. - View Dependent Claims (254, 255, 256, 257, 258, 259, 260, 261, 262, 263, 264, 265, 266, 267)
