wherein a location of the portable unit is estimated by the radio frequency signals transmitted from the portable unit to a processor device.

receiving a first energy and a second energy emitted from within close proximity to a computer; powering a portable unit, using the first energy, wherein said portable unit comprises; buttons that indicate a status of said portable unit when selected; and storage for storing a user identifier; determining a position and status of the portable unit, using the second energy; transmitting the user identifier to the computer; and simultaneously transmitting the position and status of the portable unit to the computer.

11. A machine-implemented method comprising steps of:

reading identification information pertaining to a user of a pointing device, received from the pointing device; loading a configuration for the user of the pointing device, wherein said configuration comprises privileges of the user while using a computer; receiving an input from the user; simultaneously with receiving the input, confirming an identity of the user by reading received radio frequency signals comprising the identification information and comparing said identification information with a list of identification information for authorized users; and accepting the input if the identity of the user is confirmed as being within the list.

12. An input-pointing device for use with a computer system, the device comprising:

a pad comprising; an array of radio frequency antennas; and a data link connecting the pad and the computer system; a mouse comprising at least one antenna for reflecting radio frequency signals; wherein the array of radio frequency antennas transmits a radio frequency signal and receives a corresponding radio signal reflected by the at least one mouse antenna; and wherein the reflected radio frequency signal is used to estimate a location of the mouse with respect to the array of antennas. - View Dependent Claims (13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19)
