Abstract

The device for securing medical tubing is an attachment for use with medical tubing, such as a nasal cannula, nasogastric/orogastric tubes or the like, that permits the medical tubing to be comfortably and releasably secured to the skin of the patient. The device for securing medical tubing includes a base having opposed inner and outer surfaces. Laterally opposed peripheral edges of the first surface of the base are releasably secured to one another to form a channel for receiving and releasably securing a portion of the medical tubing. The outer surface of the base is divided into an attachment portion adapted for releasable attachment to the patient'"'"'s skin, and an outwardly facing portion. Preferably, a layer of non-allergenic adhesive is applied to the attachment portion of the outer surface. The adhesive layer may be covered by a release strip.

Claims

1. A device for securing medical tubing, comprising:

a base having opposed inner and outer surfaces;

mating peripheral fasteners for releasably securing laterally opposed peripheral edges of the inner surface of the base together, the base defining a channel adapted for receiving and releasably securing a portion of medical tubing passing through the channel;

at least one central fastener attached to the inner surface of the base, the at least one central fastener being adapted for attachment to the medical tubing, the at least one central fastener releasably securing the portion of medical tubing within the channel; and

an adhesive layer formed on a portion of the outer surface of the base, the adhesive layer being adapted for releasably securing the outer surface of the base to a patient'"'"'s skin.

2. The device for securing medical tubing as recited in claim 1, wherein said base is formed from a sheet of water-resistant, flexible material.

3. The device for securing medical tubing as recited in claim 1, wherein said peripheral fasteners comprise mating hook and loop fasteners.

4. The device for securing medical tubing as recited in claim 1, further comprising a tubing fastener adapted for being secured to the portion of medical tubing passing through the channel.

5. The device for securing medical tubing as recited in claim 4, wherein the at least one central fastener and the tubing fastener comprise mating hook and loop fasteners.

6. The device for securing medical tubing as recited in claim 1, further comprising a release strip releasably covering the adhesive layer.

7. The device for securing medical tubing as recited in claim 1, wherein said base has a central fold line formed therein for defining the channel.

8. A device for securing medical tubing, comprising:

a base having opposed inner and outer surfaces;

means for releasably securing laterally opposed peripheral edges of the inner surface of the base together, the base defining a channel adapted for receiving and releasably securing a portion of medical tubing passing through the channel;

means for releasably securing the medical tubing to the inner surface of the base within the channel; and

means for releasably securing the outer surface of the base to a patient'"'"'s skin.

The device for securing medical tubing as recited in claim 8, wherein said means for releasably securing the laterally opposed peripheral edges of the inner surface of the base together comprises mating peripheral fasteners respectively secured to the laterally opposed peripheral edges of the inner surface.

10. The device for securing medical tubing as recited in claim 9, wherein said mating peripheral fasteners comprise mating hook and loop fasteners.

11. The device for securing medical tubing as recited in claim 8, wherein said base is formed from a sheet of water-resistant, flexible material.

The device for securing medical tubing as recited in claim 8, wherein said means for releasably securing the medical tubing to the inner surface of the base and within the channel comprises at least one central fastener attached to the inner surface of the base, the at least one central fastener being adapted for attachment to the medical tubing.

13. The device for securing medical tubing as recited in claim 12, further comprising a tubing fastener adapted for being secured to the portion of medical tubing passing through the channel.

14. The device for securing medical tubing as recited in claim 13, wherein the at least one central fastener and the tubing fastener comprise mating hook and loop fasteners.

15. The device for securing medical tubing as recited in claim 8, wherein said means for releasably securing the outer surface of the base to the patient'"'"'s skin comprises an adhesive layer formed on a portion of the outer surface of the base.

16. The device for securing medical tubing as recited in claim 15, further comprising a release strip releasably covering the adhesive layer.

17. The device for securing medical tubing as recited in claim 8, wherein said base has a central fold line formed therein for defining the channel.

18. A device for securing medical tubing, comprising:

a base made from a sheet of water-resistant, flexible material, the base having opposed inner and outer surfaces, the base having a central fold line therein defining a skin attachment portion and a closure flap;

a layer of adhesive disposed on the outer surface of the skin attachment portion for attaching the skin attachment portion to a patient'"'"'s skin; and

mating releasable fasteners attached peripherally to the inner surface of the skin attachment portion and the closure flap;

whereby the closure flap may be folded and releasably attached to the skin attachment portion to secure a portion of the medical tubing extending between the closure flap and the skin attachment portion.

The device for securing medical tubing according to claim 18, further comprising a central fastener attached to the inner surface of said base, the central fastener extending across the closure flap and the skin attachment portion, the central portion releasably fastening to itself when the closure flap is folded over the portion of medical tubing to further secure the medical tubing centrally within said base.

The device for securing medical tubing according to claim 19, further comprising a tubing fastener having means for being temporarily secured around the portion of the medical tubing extending between the closure flap and the skin attachment portion, the tubing fastener releasably mating with said central fastener to further secure the medical tubing centrally within said base.
