Abstract

A system and method for assembling segments of recorded music or video from among various versions or variations of a recording, into a new version or composition, such that a first segment of a first version of a recorded work is attached to a segment of a second segment of a second version of the recorded work, to create a new version of the recorded work.

Claims

1. A system comprising:

a memory to store data representing a first version of a composition and a second version of said composition, each of such versions divided into a plurality of segments, each of said segments including a pre-defined portion of said composition; and

a processor to assemble a third version of said composition from a first segment of said first version and from a second segment of said second version.

2. The system as in claim 1, wherein said memory is to store said third version.

3. The system as in claim 1, wherein said processor is to issue a signal in advance of a completion of a display of said first segment of said first version, said signal alerting a user of the upcoming completion of said first segment.

4. The system as in claim 3, wherein said processor is to issue a signal associated with said segment of said second version, said signal indicating that said second segment is suitable for assembly onto said first segment of said first version.

5. The system as in claim 1, wherein said processor is to issue a signal indicating that a first segment of said third version was assembled from said first version and indicating that a second segment of said third version was assembled from said second version.

6. The system as in claim 1, wherein said processor is to issue a signal indicating that a first segment of said third version includes a first mode of said composition, and a signal indicating that a second segment of said third version includes a second mode of said composition.

7. The system as in claim 1, wherein said processor is to assemble said third version by linking an end of said first segment with a start of said second segment to maintain a musical flow of said third version.

8. The system as in claim 1, wherein said processor is to modify a duration of said second version to approximate a duration of said first version.

9. A method comprising:

designating a segmentation break at a pre-defined point in each of a plurality of versions of a composition; and

accepting an instruction, said instruction to alter at said segmentation break a display of a first of said plurality of versions and to continue from said segmentation point a display of a second of said plurality of versions.

10. The method as in claim 9, comprising recording said instruction, and associating said instruction with said first of said plurality of versions and said second of said plurality of version.

11. The method as in claim 10, comprising:

displaying an indication of said segmentation break in advance of a display associated with said pre-defined point of said first of said plurality of versions; and

displaying an indication of said second of said plurality of versions and an indication of a third of said plurality of versions, prior to said display associated with said pre-defined point.

12. The method as in claim 9, comprising modifying a duration of said second of said plurality of versions to match a duration of said first of said plurality of versions.

13. A method comprising:

presenting to a user an indication of a plurality of recordings of a composition, each of said recordings including a segmentation indication at a pre-defined point of said composition;

linking at said pre-defined point of said composition stored data representing a first segment of a first of said recordings of said composition, to stored data representing a second segment of a second recording of said composition; and

storing as a new recording data representing said first segment and said second segment.

14. The method as in claim 13, comprising issuing to said user a signal in advance of said pre-defined point, said signal indicating a possibility of a selection of said second segment from among a plurality of segments and the possibility of linking of said second segment to said first segment.

15. A method of assembling a version of a composition, the method comprising:

presenting a visual representation corresponding to each of a plurality of first segments of each of a plurality of versions of said composition;

accepting a selection of a first segment from among said plurality of said first segments;

presenting a plurality of segments immediately subsequent to said first segment of said versions from among said plurality of versions;

accepting a selection from among said immediately subsequent presented segments;

appending said accepted subsequent segment to said first segment;

repeating said presenting and accepting of subsequent segments of said composition until an entire duration of said composition is assembled.

16. The method as in claim 15, comprising accepting a default segment for said immediately subsequent presented segment if said selection for said immediately subsequent presented segment is not received by a processor.

17. A method of assembling a work, comprising:

presenting an indication of a first plurality of pre-defined variations for a first segment of said work;

accepting a selection from said first plurality for said first segment of said work;

identifying a second plurality of pre-defined variations for a second segment of said work based on said selection from said first plurality p1 accepting a selection from among said second plurality of pre-defined variations for said second segment of said work; and

associating said selection from said first plurality with said selection from said second plurality.

18. The method as in claim 17, comprising presenting an indication of said selection from said first plurality and an indication of said selection from among said second plurality and an indication of a combination of said selections.
