Abstract

The present invention relates to articles of manufacture having a formulation distributed therein, wherein the formulation comprises an active agent which manifests a desirable property when released from the articles of manufacture. The present invention also relates to methods for manufacturing these articles of manufacture, to vehicles for applying the formulation to these articles of manufacture, and to perception indicators indicating the presence and the amount of formulation comprising an active agent applied to an article of manufacture.

Claims

1. A method for obtaining microparticles having an active ingredient dispersed therein, comprising:

a) forming a stirred melt of a formulation comprising the active ingredient; and

b) obtaining microparticles from the formulation of a),

wherein the microparticles obtained have the active ingredient dispersed therein.

2. A method as defined in claim 1, wherein the microparticles are obtained by homogenization of the formulation of b).

3. A method as defined in claim 1, wherein the formulation further comprises a binding agent.

4. A method as defined in claim 1, wherein the microparticles have a release index of between about 1 and about 20.

5. A method as defined in claim 2, wherein step b) further comprises homogenization of the formulation to obtain microdroplets.

6. A method as defined in claim 5, further comprising cooling the microdroplets to obtain microparticles.

7. A method as defined in claim 1, wherein the formulation comprises a carrier material.

8. A method as defined in claim 7, wherein the carrier material is a lipid, a fatty acid-based lipid, a fatty acid, a glyceride or any combination thereof.

A method as defined in claim 7, wherein the carrier material is caproic acid, caprylic acid, capric acid, undecanoic acid, lauric acid, tridecanoic acid, myristic acid, pentadecanoic acid, palmitic acid, heptadecanoic acid, stearic acid, oleic acid, elaidic acid, linoleic acid, linolenic acid, arachidic acid, arachidonic acid, a fatty acid derivative, tripalmitin, tristearin or glycerol monostearate or any combination thereof.

10. A method as defined in claim 7, wherein the carrier material includes a composition of stearic acid and palmitic acid.

11. A method as defined in claim 7, wherein the carrier material includes a composition of stearic acid, palmitic acid and a natural butter.

12. A method as defined in claim 11, wherein the natural butter is olive butter, mango butter, grape seed butter, shea butter or lemon butter or any combination thereof.

13. A method as defined in claim 3, wherein the binding agent is a polyacrylic (PAC), a polyurethane (PU), a polysiloxane (POL), a polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP), a guar gum or an acrylic base or any solution or suspension or combination thereof.

14. A method as defined in claim 1, wherein the formulation further comprises a surfactant.

15. A method as defined in claim 14, wherein the surfactant includes an ionic or a nonionic surfactant.

16. A method as defined in claim 14, wherein the surfactant includes cetyl trimethylammonium chloride (CTAC).

17. A method for obtaining microparticles composed of lipids, fatty acid-based lipids, fatty acids, glycerides or any combination thereof and having an active ingredient dispersed therein, comprising:

a) forming a stirred melt of a formulation comprising the lipids, fatty acid-based lipids, fatty acids, glycerides or any combination thereof and the active ingredient; and

b) obtaining microparticles from the formulation of a);

wherein the microparticles obtained have the active ingredient dispersed therein.

A method as defined in claim 17, wherein the microparticles are composed of caproic acid, caprylic acid, capric acid, undecanoic acid, lauric acid, tridecanoic acid, myristic acid, pentadecanoic acid, palmitic acid, heptadecanoic acid, stearic acid, oleic acid, elaidic acid, linoleic acid, linolenic acid, arachidic acid, arachidonic acid, a fatty acid derivative, tripalmitin, tristearin, glycerol monostearate or any combination thereof.

19. A method as defined in claim 17, wherein the microparticles are obtained by homogenization of the formulation of b).

20. A method as defined in claim 19, wherein step b) further comprises homogenization of the formulation to obtain microdroplets.

21. A method as defined in claim 20, further comprising cooling the microdroplets to obtain microparticles.

22. A method as defined in claim 17, wherein the microparticles undergo progressive erosion in response to a stimulus to cause gradual release of the active ingredient.

23. A method for obtaining microparticles composed of lipids, fatty acid-based lipids, fatty acids, glycerides or any combination thereof and having an active ingredient dispersed therein, comprising:

c) forming a stirred melt of a formulation comprising the lipids, fatty acid-based lipids, fatty acids, glycerides or any combination thereof and the active ingredient; and

d) obtaining microparticles from the formulation of a);

wherein the microparticles obtained have the active ingredient dispersed therein and undergo progressive erosion in response to a stimulus to cause gradual release of the active ingredient.
