Abstract

Files may be stored by a plurality of director devices. At times, a central director archive may deduplicate a file by removing the file from each of the plurality of director devices that is storing the file. The archive generally stores all files stored by each of the director devices. In one example, a director archive includes a processing unit that generates a list of identifiers of files stored by the director archive device that should be removed from a director device in accordance with policies of the files, wherein the director archive device is configured to store copies of files stored by the director device, and wherein the director device is communicatively coupled to the director archive device, and a network interface that sends the list of identifiers to the director device to cause the director device to delete the files from local storage of the director device.

Claims

1. A method comprising:

generating, by a director archive device, a list of identifiers of one or more files stored by the director archive device that should be removed from a director device in accordance with policies of the respective one or more files, wherein the director archive device stores copies of files stored by the director device, and wherein the director device is communicatively coupled to the director archive device; and

sending the list of identifiers to the director device to cause the director device to delete the one or more files from local storage of the director device.

2. The method of claim 1, further comprising sending the list of identifiers to a plurality of director devices, wherein each of the plurality of director devices is communicatively coupled to the director archive device and wherein each of the plurality of director devices is associated with a common entity.

The method of claim 1, wherein the director device comprises a first director device, wherein generating the list of identifiers comprises generating a first list of identifiers for the first director device, and wherein sending the list of identifiers comprises sending the first list of identifiers to the first director device, the method further comprising:

generating a second list of identifiers of one or more files stored by the director archive device that should be removed from a second director device in accordance with policies of the respective one or more files of the second list; and

sending the second list of identifiers to the second director device to cause the second director device to delete the one or more files of the second list from local storage of the second director device.

4. The method of claim 1, wherein generating the list of identifiers comprises generating a list comprising file signatures for each of the one or more files.

5. The method of claim 4, further comprising calculating the file signatures by executing one or more hash functions on the one or more files.

6. A director archive device comprising:

a processing unit configured to generate a list of identifiers of one or more files stored by the director archive device that should be removed from a director device in accordance with policies of the respective one or more files, wherein the director archive device is configured to store copies of files stored by the director device, and wherein the director device is communicatively coupled to the director archive device; and

a network interface configured to send the list of identifiers to the director device to cause the director device to delete the one or more files from local storage of the director device.

The director archive device of claim 6, wherein the network interface is configured to send the list of identifiers to a plurality of director devices, wherein each of the plurality of director devices is communicatively coupled to the director archive device and wherein each of the plurality of director devices is associated with a common entity.

The director archive device of claim 6, wherein the director device comprises a first director device, wherein the list of identifiers comprises a first list of identifiers for the first director device, and wherein the network interface is configured to send the first list of identifiers to the first director device,

wherein the processing unit is configured to generate a second list of identifiers of one or more files stored by the director archive device that should be removed from a second director device in accordance with policies of the respective one or more files of the second list, and

wherein the network interface is configured to send the second list of identifiers to the second director device to cause the second director device to delete the one or more files of the second list from local storage of the second director device.

9. The director archive device of claim 6, wherein to generate the list of identifiers, the processing unit generates a list comprising file signatures for each of the one or more files.

10. The director archive device of claim 6, wherein the processing unit is configured to calculate the file signatures by executing one or more hash functions on the one or more files.

11. A system comprising:

a director device configured to store a plurality of files; and

a director archive device communicatively coupled to the director archive device comprising;

a computer-readable medium configured to store copies of the plurality of files stored by the director device;

a processing unit configured to generate a list of identifiers of one or more files stored by the director archive device that should be removed from the director device in accordance with policies of the respective one or more files; and

a network interface configured to send the list of identifiers to the director device to cause the director device to delete the one or more files from local storage of the director device.

12. The system of claim 11, further comprising a plurality of director devices associated with a common entity that are each communicatively coupled to the director archive device, wherein the network interface of the director archive device is configured to send the list of identifiers to each of the plurality of director devices.

The system of claim 11, wherein the director device comprises a first director device, wherein the list of identifiers comprises a first list of identifiers for the first director device, and wherein the network interface is configured to send the first list of identifiers to the first director device, the system further comprising a second director device, wherein the processing device is configured to generate a second list of identifiers of one or more files stored by the director archive device that should be removed from a second director device in accordance with policies of the respective one or more files of the second list, and wherein the network interface of the director archive device is configured to send the second list of identifiers to the second director device to cause the second director device to delete the one or more files of the second list from local storage of the second director device.

14. The system of claim 11, wherein to generate the list of identifiers, the processing unit of the director archive device is configured to file signatures for each of the one or more files.

15. The system of claim 14, wherein the processing unit of the director archive device is configured to calculate the file signatures by executing one or more hash functions on the one or more files.

16. A computer-readable storage medium encoded with instructions that cause a processor of a director archive device to:

generate a list of identifiers of one or more files stored by the director archive device that should be removed from a director device in accordance with policies of the respective one or more files, wherein the director archive device stores copies of files stored by the director device, and wherein the director device is communicatively coupled to the director archive device; and

send the list of identifiers to the director device to cause the director device to delete the one or more files from local storage of the director device.

The computer-readable storage medium of claim 16, further comprising instructions that cause the processor to send the list of identifiers to a plurality of director devices, wherein each of the plurality of director devices is communicatively coupled to the director archive device and wherein each of the plurality of director devices is associated with a common entity.

The computer-readable storage medium of claim 16, wherein the director device comprises a first director device, wherein the instructions that cause the processor to generate the list of identifiers comprise instructions that cause the processor to generate a first list of identifiers for the first director device, and wherein the instructions that cause the processor to send the list of identifiers comprise instructions that cause the processor to send the first list of identifiers to the first director device, further comprising instructions that cause the processor to:

generate a second list of identifiers of one or more files stored by the director archive device that should be removed from a second director device in accordance with policies of the respective one or more files of the second list; and

send the second list of identifiers to the second director device to cause the second director device to delete the one or more files of the second list from local storage of the second director device.

19. The computer-readable storage medium of claim 16, wherein the instructions that cause the processor to generate the list of identifiers comprise instructions that cause the processor to generate a list comprising file signatures for each of the one or more files.

20. The computer-readable storage medium of claim 19, further comprising instructions that cause the processor to calculate the file signatures by executing one or more hash functions on the one or more files.
